Alvin Hurlbutt Obituary

PENACOOK – Alvin Freeland Hurlbutt Jr., 80, of Penacook, N.H., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 4, 2017, at Merrimack County Nursing Home.
Al was born in Concord, N.H., in the spring of 1937 to Alvin and Beth (Levett) Hurlbutt Sr. He grew up in Penacook graduating from Penacook High School with the class of 1956.
During his junior and senior years of high school he attended Army ROTC (The Reserve Officers Training Corps). After graduating, Alvin joined and served four years of service with the United States Navy, most of it spent on the seas. After his service to his country he returned to Penacook and began work for J.P. Stevens textile mill in Franklin, he worked there for several years until its closure. Al then went to work for the Allied Leather Co. in Penacook where he worked for 27 years before going to work as a custodian for the Merrimack Valley School District in Penacook, and retired from there in 1999.
Al was a lifelong resident of Penacook, and raised all six of his children there. He had a passion for woodworking; spending many hours in his woodworking shop making crafts and wooden toys for his grandchildren. He enjoyed time with family and adored all of his grandchildren.
Alvin was predeceased by a son, John Hurlbutt, in 2012; and a sister, Sandra Griffith. He is survived by three daughters and their husbands; Donna Decoteau and her husband, Patrick, of Wilbraham, Mass.; Patricia Cleveland and her husband, Craig, of Loudon; and Katherine Hurlbutt and her husband, Timothy Hodgdon, of Loudon; two sons, James Hurlbutt of Chapel Hill, N.C.; Robert Hurlbutt and his wife Stephanie of Andover; his two sisters Shirley Hellauer of Conn.; and Jane Coloumb of Pembroke; his step-brother Edward Kibbee of Texas; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, October 13, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Funeral services will immediately follow at the Wendell J. Butt Funeral Home in Concord, N.H., at 11 a.m., Pastor Terry Odell will officiate. Committal services will immediately follow in the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation 6520 N. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33309-2132 or at msfocus.org; to the Disabled Veterans of America at dav.org.
Alvin Hurlbutt Jr. Calling hours will be held Friday, Oct. 13, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Wendell J. Butt Funeral Home, 42 Washington St. Penacook with a funeral service following at 11 a.m.  Inurnment will immediately follow at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen.
