Chris Kane Obituary

Chris Kane

Concord, NH - Christopher Kane, 68, of Concord NH passed away on September 25, 2023, while on a family trip to Sonoma, CA.

Born on December 4, 1954, in Worcester, MA, Chris grew up mostly in Westchester County, NY, and moved to East Hardwick, VT when he was 17 years old. In his professional life he was a strict adherent to the philosophy of pursuing one's passion first and finding a way to be paid for it later. Chris' first passion was music, and he was an accomplished classical guitarist and teacher. He performed throughout New England and won prizes in international competitions.

Chris continued to perform and teach while pursuing his second passion in the protection of rare plants and old-growth forests. After earning a master's degree from Antioch University in his 40s, his career as a field botanist began with the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests. This experience led him to work as a consultant to land trusts and conservation commissions, and as a part-time employee of the NH Natural Heritage Bureau. Chris was involved in many volunteer activities related to the protection and enjoyment of the natural environment, including the Concord Conservation Commission, Merrimack River Greenway Trail, Five Rivers Conservation Trust, and the Eastern Old-Growth Forest Conference, to name a few. Chris was actively working to find, protect, and advocate for rare plant species and old-growth forests until the end.

Chris enjoyed hiking in the forests he loved so much and was a familiar face in the White Mountains and on his favorite trails around Concord. He also loved to fish-saltwater, freshwater, with flies or with bait and tackle-and was ready anytime and anywhere and kept a list of fishing buddies handy at all times (you know who you are!). And above all he cherished every moment spent with his large and growing family who share many, many loving memories of their amazing brother, husband, father, cousin, and uncle.

Chris is survived by his wife of 39 years, Eve Oyer, of Concord, NH; his son Benjamin Kane of Kingston, NY, his daughter Hilary (Kane) Seely of Milwaukee, WI; Ben's wife Paige Mead and their daughter Felix; Hilary's husband Jim Seely, their daughter Simone and their son Bo. Chris leaves behind his brother Timothy Kane and his wife Suki Skidmore of Cincinnati, OH; his sister Rachel Kane of East Hardwick, VT; his brother Barnabas Kane and his wife Maggie Kane of Denver, CO; and his brother Patrick Kane and his wife Anne Galloway of East Hardwick, VT. Chris will also be deeply missed by a large contingency of cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, hiking companions, fishing buddies, his Supper Club, the South End Men's Auxiliary Book Group, and many other friends near and far.

We are all so grateful to have shared the love, adventures, and traditions of this extraordinary person.

A gathering in celebration of Chris' life will be held on October 28 at 2:00pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Concord, 274 Pleasant St., Concord, NH. Those unable to attend in person are invited to attend online via the church website. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Chris' name to the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests.

Yesterday

Dearest Eve, Hilary and Ben,
I ran into Chris at Environmental events from time to time and just today planned to contact him to see if a group I lead on Mirror Lake could engage his services. Please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of your Dad and partner. Of course I knew him mostly through Conant and he was one of the kindest, most supportive fathers, in a group of truly caring people. In his presence the calmest he projected, and his wonderful smile and thoughtful viewpoints were inspiring. I'm so terribly sorry for your loss. Kathleen Sciarappa

Chris was such a good man, and my UMaine softball buddy. He would always bring his dog Otis, who we all loved. I will continue to miss his kind demeanor and friendship. Rest in peace my friend!

Hi Eve and family. I only recently learned that Chris has been given his angel wings. I send my deepest sympathies to you and your entire family. In honor of Chris, a truly wonderful human being and artist!! I recall the adventure of driving to the Aspen music festival with Chris, and meeting you both in Burlington in our younger days! Chris added so much joy to life and was a deeply kind, gentle person. I miss his presence among us all. My prayers to you. Laura

Chris was someone I feel very fortunate to have known and shared good times with. Our paths crossed as a result of our mutual enthusiasm for old trees and old growth forests and we had exciting excursions to places where we looked for wild forests and rare plants. Thanks to Chris, these are among my most treasured memories. On a personal level, I greatly admired Chris´ respect for and intense interest in nature and his kind and open way of being.

It is Chris´ generosity of spirit and enthusiasm that we remember first and most. Whether it was drifting for stripers when Chris was always happier for someone else to catch the big one, or botanizing and sharing amazing finds with a spirit of collaboration and acknowledgment for fellow colleagues, or his passion and appreciation for old growth forests and the history and importance of biodiversity that those old trees know even better than we do. Chris´ talents as an ecologist, angler, musician, and so much more are well known. Perhaps more than anything, Chris´ talent for friendship and finding and keeping connection will always be remembered and treasured. To be more like him in that way is a gift to his memory. To pause and marvel more at the rare and precious in life - a natural community, a school of stripers chasing mackerel, a kind word of acknowledgment for someone else´s achievements, a simple but meaningful friendship. Thank you, Chris. We miss you greatly. Liz and Dick Ober

I briefly met Christopher on the mezzanine at the Concord YMCA as we both watched a our kids' swimming lesson. I recognized him since he had recently been featured in the Concord Monitor for a guitar performance. I read his obituary today in the 7Days weekly paper in Vermont, where I live now, and discovered so much more about his life. What amazes is me is how closely our interests matched. I'm left with the sense of a great opportunity missed - to have known someone with whom I could have exchanged so much knowledge, spirit, and adventures. I miss him without ever having known him.

Friends of Mount Sunapee send our condolences to Chris's wife Eve and his family. The suddenness of Chris's passing is unimaginable as he was so full of life and optimism.

I had the privilege of accompanying Chris on many excursions on Mount Sunapee with groups that he was able to communicate the wonders of this amazing forest of which he rediscovered in 1997. He truly loved this forest and never ceased to express his amazement to those who accompanied him.

He was an invaluable contributor to our organization in so many ways. We were blessed to have him as an educator, mentor and friend.

He was so happy when I reached out to him to make a film about Mount Sunapee's Old Growth. His response was "are you kidding of course I'm in."

He will be sorely missed by so many. A gentle spirit who gave so much.

I have just received the terrible message of Chris' death from my daughter Sarah, who was a guest student staying with the Oyer-Kane family for an entire year in 2002/03. Chris and Eve were the best and most generous people she could have as her guest parents. We have been grateful to them ever since. We later met in Prague and, last, in New Hamphire in 2009. It has been only this year that I exchanged long emails with Chris, one of the most likeable and fine people I have met in my whole life. An incomprehensible loss, most to his family of course, but also to his friends, among whom I have the honor to count myself for ever.

So sorry Eve, Hilary, Ben and family. Chris was such an easy going guy who was always positive. We were very involved with Chris and family in the early 2000´s with the Concord National and NH Lightning softball programs. Many great memories. Over the years some of us softball guys got together a few times a year including Chris. With Covid etc. we we have not met for awhile which I now regret even more. You will be missed. Meeting Chris was one of the great gifts I received by joining the South End Auxiliary Book Club. I´m so sad that I never had the chance to fish or play guitar with him. He was an amazing human.
