Doris Milne Obituary

Doris Marguerite Milne, 91, of Contoocook, passed away Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, surrounded by family members at the County Village Nursing Home in Lancaster. Though Doris had moved to Lancaster recently, she spent 60 years in Contoocook where she was married and raised her family.

She was born Feb. 21, 1921, in Maynard, Mass., the only child of Kathryn (McCormack) and George White. After graduating from Regis College, she moved to Contoocook to teach Latin and English, and coach the women's basketball team at Hopkinton High School where she met her husband of 61 years, William H. Milne. Retuning to substitute teaching in the 1970s she was dubbed the "super sub" of Hopkinton High School. Many of her students from high school have stayed in touch with her throughout her entire life. Doris had the gift to connect with her students.

She is survived by her husband, William, of Littleton, N.H.; a daughter, Kathryn Teamer, and her husband, Matthew, of Lancaster; three sons, William Jr. and his wife, Kate, of Barrington; Robert and his wife, Laurie, of Steamboat, Colo.; and Jonathan and Cindy of Newmarket; and seven grandchildren, Zachary and Katryn Treamer; Jonathan and Patrick Milne; Indigo, Oriah and William Milne III.

Doris enjoyed camping, gardening, reading, crafts and spending time with her grandchildren. She was also a life-long Red Sox and Bruin's fan. She was a loving mother, grandmother and wife. Doris was a devoted Catholic and only until her health began to fail, did she ever miss Sunday Mass. Doris was loved by her family and friends. With an easy going disposition, she made everyone around her feel special. Her Thanksgiving meals were something to look forward to. Doris led a good life of 91 years and will be missed.

Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, Oct. 9, from 4 to 7 p.m. at The Bennett Funeral Home 209 N. Main St., Concord. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am Wednesday at Christ the King Parish, St. John the Evangelist Church, 72 S. Main St, Concord. Burial will follow at the Contoocook Village Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Doris's name to the Friends of the Hopkinton Town Library, 61 Houston Drive, Contoocook, N.H. 03229.

Thank you, Doris, for sharing your enthusiasm, patience, and interest with us at HHS! It takes a lot of love and courage to earn the title, "Super-Sub", and to continue wearing it so well. Your delight and joy in life is so apparent in your pictures. I am thankful to your family for sharing them.

It is hard to forget Doris White Milne while in her teaching years of 1947-52 as she was our teacher and my basketball coach. I was a cut-up and always being sent to the pricipal's office but one day she "got to me" with her advice that people were laughing"at" me, not "with" me and there was a difference. I never forgot it and eventually settled down. We have kept in touch through the years and will be in our thoughts along with Bill Milne our later pricipal. Our best...Mary-Jane and Bill Sterling
