Frederick Ordway Obituary

Frederick W. Ordway, Jr.

Tilton, NH — Frederick Winfield Ordway, Jr. "Fred", 97 passed away November 3, 2021 at the NH Veterans Home in Tilton, NH. He was born February 2, 1924, in Lowell, MA, son of the late Frederick W. Ordway and Marjory (Chapman) Ordway.

Fred grew up in Bow, NH on the family dairy farm. He graduated from Concord High School in 1941, during which time he worked at the Rumford Press in Concord, NH. Soon thereafter he enlisted into the United States Navy on December 17, 1942. He served honorably until his discharge on January 28, 1946 with final rank of Torpedoman's Mate, First Class on the USS S-45. Fred continued his service in the Navy Reserves for 30 years and was a member of the American Legion.

On June 21, 1947, he married Pauline Smith before graduating from UNH and used his accounting degree throughout a long career before retiring as VP Comptroller of the Kingston-Warren Manufacturing Company in Newfields, NH. Together they had 5 children. Fred loved spending time with family and close friends and enjoyed frequent gatherings at his home in Stratham and later in Newmarket. He was also a dedicated parishioner and volunteer at Christ Church Episcopal, Exeter, NH, serving as a vestry member and treasurer for many years.

We will remember the time, energy, and experienced council he freely gave to others during difficult times. He loved ritual Sunday dinners, newspapers, his chair, the Patriots, the Red Sox, coaching little league, Glenn Miller, Floyd Cramer, Dixieland Jazz and Marching Bands. He especially enjoyed countless Saturday nights dancing with Pauline and their gang at the Rockingham Ballroom in Newmarket. He liked to go clamming and spending a warm afternoon at the beach with his family. For years he maintained a small vegetable garden. They vacationed every year in Pompano Beach, FL and would also attend Fred's naval reunions every 5 years which took them to many parts of the country. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren who lovingly called him "Bampy". In 2009 they moved to Concord, NH for 5 years and then Penacook, NH. Fred moved to the NH Veterans Home in Tilton in 2016. He was extremely proud of his service to his country and loved the camaraderie among the residents and staff.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Pauline, and three sons, John, Brian and Scott Ordway and his brother, Neil. He is survived by his daughter, Melissa Carroll and husband Robert of New London, NH and son Frederick Ordway and wife Karen of Barrington, NH; five grandsons, Robert and wife Marci, John, and Matthew Carroll, Harrison and Keith Ordway; two granddaughters, Danielle Carroll Szyperek and husband Cezary, and Amelia Ordway Van Dessel and husband Patrick; and two great grandchildren Nina Carroll and Levi Van Dessel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Fred to: The New Hampshire Veterans Home, Resident Benefit Fund, 139 Winter Street, Tilton, NH 03276

Funeral services are to be held at Christ Church Episcopal, 43 Pine Street, Exeter, NH 03833 at 10:00 AM, Friday, November 12, 2021. Masks are required to be worn at church. Burial with naval military honors will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Stratham, NH.

Deepest sympathy to Fred's family. I knew he and Pauline when there were at Granite Ledges in Concord. He played poker with a group I volunteered with for the years there were there. I just loved Fred. He kept us all laughing!! RIP dear Fred.
