George Bruno Obituary

George W. Bruno

Merrimack, NH - George W. Bruno was born in February of 1936. He was the youngest of Salvatrice and Salvatore Bruno's six children. Growing up in Hartford, Connecticut, he began to work alongside his family at age 6. As a newsboy at his brothers' newsstand, George observed bustling streets and exclaimed all the newest headlines. There, Hartford's business district inspired George's love for finance, current events, a well-cut coat, and a dapper hat.

George pursued his degree at the University of Connecticut. He tutored other students, worked night jobs, and left school for several semesters to support his mother after his father passed away. He graduated with a BS in Finance & Economics in 1961. George then served in the US Active Military Reserves. He worked for the State of Connecticut and for the State of New Hampshire in economic and industrial development.

One snowy evening on the UConn campus, George met his future wife, Sally, waiting at the bus stop. They talked all during the ride into the city, and when Sally arrived home, she announced to her mother and sister: "I've just met the boy I'm going to marry!" They shared lunch each day on campus, a wedding, 2 children, and adventures for 58 years. They also shared family: George's best pal, Joseph Maznio, whom he considered a brother, married Sally's sister, Janet.

George and Sally loved to explore the country. They lived in Connecticut, Colorado, Nevada, Arizona, and New Hampshire. George was especially fond of the Southwest, admiring the desert rock formations and the smell of sage.

In the last decade of her life, Sally lived with dementia. George was her steadfast advocate and ardent, loving, caretaker. Described by a friend as having an "effervescent" personality, George personified dedication, excellent character, tireless curiosity and devotion to family. His family and friends will always admire his life and vibrant spirit.

George passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on Sunday, September 3, 2023. He will be dearly missed by his daughter, Katherine Lackey, his son, Thomas Bruno, his granddaughter, Megan Lackey, his son-in law, David Lackey, and his daughter-in-law, Cynthia Bruno. George's 5 siblings, all pre-deceased: Sebastian Bruno, Joseph Bruno, Santina Bruno, John Bruno, and Mary Parlante.
