Herbert Leisy Obituary

Herbert F. Leisy Jr., 84, died peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2016, at Concord Hospital Hospice House. He had been hospitalized just one month for prostate cancer.

Herbert, or "Herb", was born in Cleveland, on Sept. 6, 1931. He was the son of Herbert F. Leisy Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Loud. He attended University School in Shaker Heights, Ohio and Connecticut Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. before entering the U.S. Army in 1954.

Following Administrative training in the Army, he applied these learned skills in many diverse settings, such as the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Reliance Electric and Engineering Company. He subsequently formed his own organization, Marspan, to structure his interests in International Trade and Product Design.

During his lifetime, he had many interests, especially history, economics, music and art. He pursued them, taking post graduate courses at various schools: Rhode Island School of Design, Parsons School of Design, Columbia University, Cleveland Institute of Art and Western Reserve University. He studied foreign culture by living for one year in Paris, France.

Over the years, he moved freely around the Northeastern United States, living in Cleveland and Canton, Ohio, Portland, Maine, Boston, New London and Concord. He finally settled in Concord in 2000.

He was intensely interested in Leisy family history, centering around three generations of ownership of the Leisy Brewing Company, of which his father had been President. He enjoyed being the center figure in yearly Thanksgiving gatherings, landmark birthdays and keeping communication open with the family.

Local Concord swimmers would have found him enjoying summers at Lake Kezar and winter mornings at the Holiday Inn pool.

He is survived by his elder sister, Margie McKhann of Sante Fe, N.M.; his younger sister, Elsa Bacher of Fulton, Calif.; seven nieces and nephews and four grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Friends of Herbert Leisy are invited to attend an informal memorial service on Sunday, Feb. 28, at 2 p.m. at the League of NH Craftsmen headquarters, located at 49 South Main St., Concord.

In lieu of flowers, gifts of support for the League of NH Craftsmen will be appreciated and can be sent to the League headquarters.

I extend my sympathy to you for your loss. My grandfather was a cabinet maker from the old country and would do work for Mr. Leisy Sr., sometimes I would accompany him to the Leisy home in Shaker Hts. and so met them. Mrs. Leisy would ask me to play the piano for her and then I would be rewarded with the best candied citrus rind ever. I recall a letter when I was in college having studied at Old Heidelberg and Mr. Leisy Sr. telling me that it was his birth place. I have two bottle openers with the Leisy name on them as reminders of 60+ years ago. Within the past two years, I researched the Leisy brewing history in Cleveland and have the feeling that it was Herb Jr's. research. May he rest in peace.

My sincerest thoughts, prayers, and sympathy to your entire family during this difficult time. Many years ago I lived at the same place he did and always enjoyed talking to him, his smile and friendly nature. It seems like only yesterday that I saw him out walking. In fact the last time I saw him I was congratulating him on finally getting a new vehicle for himself. I will always remember he and that old brown Volvo driving around town and his long walks. I will certainly miss seeing him around Concord. He was always in such great shape, I never would have guessed him to be a day over 65.
