John Lloyd Obituary

HEBRON – John Duncan Lloyd, physician, husband, father, and friend of great warmth and compassion passed away unexpectedly and quietly on the morning of Monday, Dec. 29, 2014, at his home in Hebron.

Born in Toronto, Canada, Feb. 27, 1947, John moved with his family to Skaneateles, N.Y. as a child. He graduated from the University of Rochester in 1969. After raising a family and working as a finish carpenter in Vermont for 20 years, John was accepted into medical school and graduated from The University of Vermont College of Medicine in 1998. Dr. Lloyd moved to New Hampshire in 2002 where he was a primary care physician first in the Bristol area and most recently in Concord.

John's interests and talents were wide. He was an avid photographer, kayaker and scuba diver. He and his wife Suzanne recently returned from a long-planned photo safari to South Africa where John's love for the natural world, from the largest mammals to the smallest insects, knew no bounds. He was most excited at having recorded over 150 new bird species for his life list during that trip.

John served as the Medical Director of Newfound Area Nursing Association, Associate Medical Director for Hospice at Pemi-Baker Community Health, was a member of the Hebron Conservation Commission and enjoyed traipsing through the woods locally with Newfound Wildlife Trackers.

Dr. Lloyd was predeceased by his parents, Betty and Graydon Lloyd; his sister, Judith Lloyd; and his former wife, Lucia Gentili.

Dr. Lloyd leaves behind his wife of 30 years, State Representative Suzanne Smith; two daughters, Mika Gentili-Lloyd of Portland, Ore. and Aliza Gentili-Lloyd of Warren, R.I. His circle of friends, patients, colleagues, and acquaintances will also miss him dearly.

A memorial service celebrating John's life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 1 p.m., at the Hebron Union Congregational Church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to New Hampshire Audubon, Pemi-Baker Community Health, or the Newfound Area Nursing Association.

We are all at a loss at the sudden passing of one of the best men any of us have ever known. Especially for those who knew John for more than 50 years, as I did. We shared all the formative chapters from teen age to old age, which has created a unique flavor and bond over the years. Godspeed, old friend! We'll do it again!
Comfort and blessings to Suzanne, Mika and Aliza --

We are all at a loss at the sudden passing of such a good, caring man as Dr. John D. Lloyd. Especially for those of us who knew him for more than a half century, as I did. We shared all the chapters and aspects of growing up from teenage to old age, and John made the journey truly unique and memorable. And I'm only scratching the surface; not room enough here. Godspeed, my friend. We'll share it again. You helped us to walk the high road! Thanks for your patience, kindness and friendship. Comfort and blessings to the family.

I first saw Dr. Lloyd in the ER. His bedside manner was so kind, I asked him if he was taking new patients and switched. He was so kind and compassionate and took good care of me when I lived in the area. He made me feel I could trust him, and I did. He will be missed. What a wonderful person to have known.

Let me give my deepest condolences to John's wife and family. Many good memories of John during high school. His British racing green sports car, I think TR4A. Hunting in the fields and woods around Skaneateles for wood chucks, especially around what is now the Skaneateles Transfer station and the bus ski trips in the winter and weekends skiing at Song Mountain with much more. RIP John, you are remembered and will be missed.

I am so deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Dr. Lloyd. He was a gifted and compassionate dr and person. John was the family physician for my parents, daughter, granddaughter and for myself. Yesterday, was the four year anniversary of my mother's passing. She was very fortunate for he was also her hospice doctor. I remember the last time she saw him, she told him how handsome he was! He beamed, but I could see him holding back a few tears because he knew that her life would be over in a short time and he probably would never see her again. My family and I send our deepest sympathy to all of you, his family. He is irreplaceable and his kindness and caring will be missed. He was the best listener and what I like best, was that he was always willing to share a holistic approach rather than go down the straight and narrow. He attributed that to you, Suzanne. I feel blessed that he was a part of my life and my family.... He was more than a doctor, he was also a friend...

We had become Dr. Lloyd's patients just this past year but enjoyed talking with him. He had a great "bedside manner," was never rushed, & was very open & knowledgeable, including about alternative medicine. Not all physicians are! We discovered several things in common, not least his affection for Sen. Bernie Sanders. We were looking forward to getting to know him better. We feel as if we've lost a friend, & are very shocked & saddened by his untimely passing. Our deepest condolences to his wife & daughters.

He made me feel so comfortable and just made my life easier.

By some act of grace I was fortunate enough to meet John 43 years ago in Waitsfield, Vermont. Although separated by many miles, for many years, he has always been with me. His life was one filled with compassion and dedicated to service. It has been an honor to know him, learn from him and to be considered his friend.

Carry on brother.
