Kenneth Caswell Obituary

NEW CASTLE - Kenneth Young Caswell, 98, of New Castle, died Saturday, August 4, 2012 at the Wentworth Home in Portsmouth.

He was born in Swampscott, Mass., October 9, 1913, the son of Fred W. and Mildred Young Caswell. He graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1931, and attended Wentworth Institute in Boston.

In 1933, he established a fuel oil business with his father, mother and brother. Later service stations, propane gas and appliances were added, known as Caswell Bros. Inc. on Maplewood Ave. He retired in 1974.

Kenneth was formerly a trustee of the Portsmouth Hospital, the Chase Home for Children, a member of Portsmouth Country Club, Portsmouth Yacht Club and Elderhostel Speaker's Bureau. For many years he was a member of St. John's Masonic Lodge, and a 32 Degree Mason.

A member of Middle St. Baptist Church in Portsmouth, he taught Church school and sang in the choir. He was a member of the Men's Club, the Roger Williams Fellowship, and had served on the Church Building Committee and the Board of Trustees.

He enjoyed sailing, skiing, photography, golf and traveling. He and his wife presented travelogues of their trips.

Kenneth was a kind and loving son, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who always had time for his family. He was a happy, contented and friendly man who was much loved by many people – his family, his employees, his friends and neighbors and his caretakers. He loved children and they loved him.

He was married to Winnifred M. Claus on July 27, 1940 in the Middle Street Baptist Church. They recently celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary.

Kenneth is survived by his wife; a son, Dale K. Caswell and his wife Susan of Canterbury; a daughter Leah R. Caswell of Stratham; a granddaughter, Rachel Baker and her husband Erik; a grandson, Aaron Caswell; a great-grandson Patrick Baker; two great-granddaughters, Annie Baker and Helen Piper Caswell; a nephew and four nieces.

He was predeceased by a brother, Robert B. Caswell.
