Kelly and Family, I am so sorry about your loss of Phil. I worked with Phil at the Richards School. You all meant so much to him. He had photos throughout his office and he beamed whenever he spoke of his children, which was frequently since he could not contain his pride! I had no idea about the emotional burden he was carrying. I am so sorry.

With tears in my eyes and a huge amount of sadness weighing down my heart, I am in shock at seeing Phil's name in the obituaries. He was a one-off, an incredible soul.
One of the nicest guys I have ever known. A rare breed comprised of character, personality, compassion, intelligence. A true gentleman with a heart of gold, someone who became a fast close friend when we worked together at the local Y. I can see now, reading some of the other entries in his guest book, that his ease at working with children then started to forge his future in education.
Being the rare breed he was, he stood by my side as, 31 years ago today on June 11, 1987, he was my man of honor' at my wedding and carried my flowers, helped me with my awkward crutches I was on at the time. He was always there. I have so many memories flooding to the surface, how he was as a friend and the friendship we shared; his character in who he was and how much he loved his parents and his brothers. And although he and I lost touch, it pleases me that he found a wonderful woman, got married, had a family of his own and became the man he did, touching so many lives in the process. I don't doubt for a second that he was an amazing husband and father. I pray that he has found peace in death and that his soul will find solace at last. And I pray that his wife and family can find their footing to carry on his legacy and their lives. No words can replace his void. I hope in due time that from tears come laughter and small memories will eventually bring a smile rather than a frown. I had no idea that he had depression that would in the end contribute to his death. I wish years ago when I was back in Hopkinton that I had looked him up just to say hi and to thank him for being the kind of friend every girl should have. He had no idea how much I appreciated him for him. I will never forget his laughter, his smile. To look at his picture in the guest book, he hadn't changed at all. Still that smile. God bless his family. My condolences to them all. And I thank them for such a beautiful obituary and bringing the topic of depression to the surface and sharing his story.

To Philip's Family,
I am so sorry that you are suffering this tremendous loss. I regret not having known Philip personally. Having read his obituary, it is so clear how many people he touched with his goodness. Thank you for being so open about depression and urging those who suffer from it to seek help. The tragedy of losing loved ones this way is too terrible. Thank you for your courage. Sending you sympathy and wishing that you find a way to reach peace as you journey through grief.

I am sorry for your loss. Phil was a good man, in the 90' I found myself a single mother and my 2 boys were in the after school program Latchkey and Phil was there counselor. He was wonderful with them. He was there in the time of need for the leadership that he gave to them. He played sports, taught them so much. I am sure he has left an impact on many children. May he Rest in Peace.

To Phil's family...I had the pleasure of working with Phil when Parker Varney was renovated, converting the original open-concept plan into separate classrooms. Phil was so easy to work with, always accommodating. For some time after the project was completed, I would run into him. He would invariably be with his daughters, with smiles on all the faces. I am so sorry to hear of his suffering. Peace to you as you go through this time and move on to your next chapter.

To Phil Callanan's family and everyone who loved him,
I am so sorry for your loss.
I only know Phil because he is the principal of Mill Brook School. I met him one day while visiting my son and daughter in law who are teachers there. He offered to walk me to their classrooms and was so kind and gentle a man-I always remembered him.
Depression is something we all need to notice and pay more attention to. It is nothing to ever be ashamed about-speak up to your Dr.'s-your ministers- your families or friends if you are feeling like you are depressed. There is help for you. You are not alone.
Phil is in Good Hands now. Keep your memories close to your heart.
Blessings,

I taught the Dare Program in Mr. Callahan's class while he was at McLaughlin School in Manchester. Mr. Callahan and I spoke everyday and I enjoyed our talks about the Boston sports teams. We both loved our sports. The children who were taught by him absolutely loved him and I witnessed this first hand. You will be missed by all. Rest in Peace my dear friend Phil. The children of Manchester were very lucky to be taught by a GREAT TEACHER that you are. Amazing Grace to you Phil. My deepest condolences to the Callahan family, you are in my prayers.

You do not know me, but I am sitting here in tears to hear of another person who suffered with depression, is now gone. I am originally from Manchester, and my children had gone to Parker-Varney years ago, before Mr. Callahan had even been there, but anyone who has devoted their lives to uplifting children and adults, has to have been a very wonderful person. I have been there and back, having lost my 29 yr old son eight years ago, and it is a tricky road to travel. My sincerest condolences to you and yours.

Phil had a lot to do with my growth as an individual. He saw talent and individual skills among his staff members, and challenged them to stretch beyond their comfort zones to take on leadership roles. He encouraged both personal and professional investment in our school community, and led us toward the kind of educational improvement our students deserve. But the thing about Phil that was of greatest service to me was his willingness to struggle along with, or against me as necessary. We had our rough moments, but my hug at the last end-of-year dinner he shared with us was one of gratitude and genuine affection. Thank-you to his family and friends who supported him while he did his best to make a difference for others. By sharing your pain and his struggle so honestly, you are still helping him make a difference, and letting a little more light into the shadowed corners where others suffer alone.

Phil was one of my professors at New England College and quickly became one that I confided in. My junior year he oversaw my placement at Beech Street Elementary and was always sure to tell me I was doing a great job. You could tell that he loved teaching, but spoke fondly on his family too. He always had a smile on his face. My thoughts are with you Mrs. Callanan and your family. Phil will be missed.

Phil was so helpful dealing with an issue my grandson was having with another child. When I met him I instantly felt a kinship but figured it was a sports thing. I had no clue he was fighting the same monsters I also battle. There but for the Grace of God go I. God bless you for hanging the courage to share your pain with the hopes others won't have to. My heart breaks for you but if it's any comfort please know that Phil no longer has to face those demons. He is now out of the darkness and can see the warm glow of love everyone felt for him.

Kelly,
There are no words to express how sorry and shocked I am to hear of Phil's passing. I saw him pretty much every three weeks for 25 years to cut his hair. His love for you and his girls was evident every time he came in, telling me about ugly Christmas sweater parties you had, and showing me videos on his phone of Lucy dancing. I saw his boys grow into fine young men, and remember running into Phil at the Rover "back in the day" when we were both kids ourselves. I will mourn the loss of a friend. You and your girls will be in my thoughts for a long time to come. I hope you can somehow find strength and eventually peace.

I worked with Phil in Newport. He was a great principal; he knew people and how they behaved. He became my mentor and I argued with him all the time, but later, discovered that he was right after all. I would send him texts to tell him so and those were the ones he would respond to! LOL!
I held that man in high regard; I will miss him.

To Mrs. Callanan ,
You probably don't remember me but I was a student student at Parker-Varney when Mr. Callanan was there. He would always be so kind to me when I would get picked on and he would always make sure I had a smile on my face on my bad days. You two were one of the best influences I had growing up about how I should go on with education. My best wishes go out to you and your daughters and family.

My daughter was a student of Mill Brook School, and even though she is no longer there, she cried many times since after hearing of the passing of Mr. Callanan. She paused from crying yesterday and informed and then asked me: "Mommy, you do know that he had children, I know he had a daughter, she is 3 or maybe 4...?" It brought tears to my eyes. Children sure have a way in this life of helping us in so so many ways to understanding certain things and they even help in healing in many ways...it will be easier some days. We never do know what someone is thinking, how they may be thinking...hold no regrets, hold no hate or anger, hold no resentment....but for healing and for sanity...hold fast to hope, hold on to wonderful memories of your loved one...and know that you are surrounded by so many others that are dealing with this type of hurt, and so..my prayer to you and your family and all that need it, is to be surrounded by positivity and warmth so healing may begin, that any hurts may gradually cease to exist and joy may continue in your lives.

Dear Ms Callanan and family,
I'm so sorry for your lose. My kids go to Mill Brook School and everytime I see Mr. Callanan, he was always smiling and talking to everybody (e.g. students, staffs, parents/guardians). One heartwarming memory was when the students had their hike on the trail just outside their buildings last Fall. He was planting and had students line up to take turns to plant tulip bulbs. I was there and thought that was very wonderful of him to give the kids the experience of planting - I saw the kids' excitement. That was awesome. He had a very compassionate and generous heart which was clear to how he was with the students, staff and the parents/guardians. His concern for the welfare of the students was genuine. His dedication to the school was inspiring. He will be missed. I pray that you and your family find strength in the wonderful memories you have of him.

My condolences to the family and friends of Mr Callanan. I grew up going to Parker varney , we had a different principle at the time but when he arrived he changed the whole school , made things more fun for all of us kids at the time, he was very involved and was very big hearted. Good memory of our school taking a field trip to legends golf ! Phil showed up with his driver and his golf gloves and bang hit a ball so far and all of us were amazed, after the ball had landed everyone asked how he did that! Well he turned to all of us and said well when you hit a ball with the force and determination it will go far , he told us it related to life. The harder you try and the more you practice something you get better! Thank you for all of the memories and all of the things you did to better my schooling as a child and most importantly thank you for being a great person. Rest In Peace Mr callanan -Avery Portinari

I am in such shock. I worked the past few years at the salon Phil frequented with his girls for hair cuts. I always admired his obvious love and pride in his beautiful little girls. It showed so much what a great dad he was. I wish I would have know his inner struggles so I could have shared my experiences with him and lend a positive word or hug. Thank you for being so honest and open about his struggles in his obituary. You have along with Phil opened up a conversation that should never be hidden but encouraged. He will be remembered with great fondness.
