Philip Speigel Obituary

Philip Speigel, 89, of Concord, died Sunday, May 8, 2011 at Havenwood-Heritage Heights.

He was born December 19, 1921 in Boston, the son of Russian immigrants and one of four siblings. He was such a good sandlot baseball player in the Boston area, major league baseball teams scouted him, but too many sports injuries prevented him from pursuing a professional sports career.

After graduating high school at the beginning of World War II, he served his country in the Army on New Guinea in the South Pacific.

Phil eventually moved his family to Concord in 1954 to be close to the Brezner Tannery in Penacook, where he took great pride supervising quality control for many years. Not one to compromise his work ethic and standards, he remained in the business for decades, retiring in 1979.

As an important and respected member of Concord's Temple Beth Jacob community, Phil taught adult Hebrew classes and served as the temple brotherhood president.

He was a man who always defended what was right and ethical, never compromised his values and placed his family above everything else in life. He was a devoted and beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.

He is survived by his extraordinary and loving wife of 66 years, Rosalie, of Concord; sons Larry, Elliot and James (of Weirs Beach, New York and Concord, respectively); daughter-in-law Teresa; and grandchildren Seth, Tanya, Zachary, Benjamin and Rose.

A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, May 12 at 7 p.m. at Temple Beth Jacob, 67 Broadway, with burial service at Blossom Hill Cemetery in Concord at 9 a.m. Friday, May 13.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Temple Beth Jacob.

To the Speigel Family - My deepest sympathies on your recent loss of Phil. A life well lived never perishes; I know you will easily draw upon and cherish all the memories that are rich in love, laughter and light. When I think of couples who endured the test of time, Rosalie, your names will be high on my list! You exemplify the Robert Frost poem....Love can think of no devotion, Greater than being shore to ocean, Holding the curve of one position, Counting on endless repetition. God's love and graces be with you always.

Best darn ping pong player I ever met; His life lives on, a kind heart, a role model for me in my youth. Mild mannered even with my friend James Speigel and I broke a kitchen his kitchen window playing hockey in his back yard. Larry M.
