Richard Cbe Obituary

Richard M. Langworth CBE

Moultonborough, NH - Richard M. Langworth, CBE, a distinguished author and historian renowned for his expertise in automotive history and Sir Winston S. Churchill, passed away on February 20, 2025, at the age of 83.

Born in 1941, Langworth's early career included service as a U.S. Coast Guard officer from 1964 to 1967 and a position at the Pennsylvania Department of Health. A chance sale of a car article led him to an editorship at Automobile Quarterly, marking the beginning of his prolific writing career. Over the years, he authored or co-authored more than 60 books on automotive history, including notable works such as Kaiser-Frazer: Last Onslaught on Detroit, Triumph Cars, and The Encyclopedia of American Cars. His passion for classic automobiles was evident in his long-term editorship of The Packard Cormorant from 1975 to 2001 and his role as a trustee of the Packard Motorcar Foundation since 2003.

Langworth's fascination with Winston Churchill led him to found the Churchill Study Unit in 1968, which evolved into the International Churchill Society. He served as editor of its quarterly journal, Finest Hour, for over three decades, producing 150 issues. His dedication to preserving Churchill's legacy resulted in 12 books on the British statesman, including Churchill by Himself and A Connoisseur's Guide to the Books of Sir Winston Churchill. In recognition of his contributions to Anglo-American relations and Churchillian scholarship, he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in 1998.

In 2014, Langworth joined Hillsdale College as a Senior Fellow for the Churchill Project, furthering his commitment to Churchill studies. He divided his time between Moultonborough, New Hampshire, and Eleuthera, Bahamas, where he continued his writing and enjoyed the company of his wife, Barbara.

Richard M. Langworth's legacy as a meticulous historian and passionate author leaves an indelible mark on both automotive history and Churchillian scholarship.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; his son, Ian (Emily); and his grandchildren, Michael and Aiden.

Dear Mrs. Langworth, I am very sad to read of your husband's passing.
My daughter Maggie is a Hillsdale student, in her junior year, and I saw the email Dr. Ann sent acknowledging your husbands contributions. Maggie's grandfather, Chuck M. McGee, is a selectman in Moultonborough. May Richard's memory always be a blessing. Chuck C. McGee, Concord
