Robert Clayton Rainie, M.D., 92, of Concord, passed away Monday, October 8, 2012 at Concord's Hospice House after a 10 year battle with Alzheimers Disease. He was born May 10, 1920, in Concord, the second child of Ruth (Garland) and Herbert W. Rainie. He was predeceased by his brother, Donald G. Rainie in 1976.

Bob graduated from Concord schools and went on to receive a bachelor's degree (1941) and medical degrees from Dartmouth College (1942) and Boston University (1943).

He and his wife Dora (Dode) Merino were married in 1944 and celebrated 68 years of marriage on October 7, 2012. During his medical training, they lived in Lewiston, Maine, Boston, and Hanover, before moving to Concord in 1950, where they raised their three children, Scott, Robin and Jennifer (Jiffi). He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and also served in the Korean War with the USAF between 1953 and 1955.

Dr. Rainie has been a fellow of the American College of Physicians, president of the NH Medical Society, the NH Diabetes Association, and the NH Heart Association, medical director at Havenwood, diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, Chief Medical Consultant for the State of NH Disability Determination Services – VR, and a 30 year medical staff member at Concord Hospital. He ran a private medical practice for 31 years in Concord while consulting part time for DDS-VR, and upon retirement from practice in 1986, continued his work with the State of NH for 7 more years.

He was an original trustee of the Capitol Center of the Arts and Chairman of the William H. Gile Concert Series Trust Fund, and he was a charter member of the Concord Chorale. Bob was a long-term member of many organizations in the Concord area, including the Nevers' Band, the Concord Music Club, the Concord Community Chorus' Messiah, the Bow Brook Club, and the Concord Country Club, where he won the Father-Son Tournament in 1965.

Bob has received numerous awards over the years from medical, musical and philanthropic organizations, including the A.H. Robins Community Service Award from the NH Medical Society in 1987. His interests included music, tennis, golf (especially in Treasure Cay, Bahamas), and spending time with his family in Ocean Park, Maine. He was an accomplished trombone and baritone player, pianist and vocalist.

Bob leaves his beloved wife, Dode; his son Scott and wife Cindy(Call) of Concord, his daughter Robin Rainie-Lobacz and husband, Kenzie, of Dana Point, Calif., and his daughter Jiffi of Concord. He has one remaining grandchild, Jeb Wilson of Santa Barbara, Calif.; and was predeceased by his loving granddaughter Jody Wilson. He also leaves three step grandchildren; six step great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held Sunday, October 14, at 2 p.m., at the South Congregational Church in Concord, with a reception to follow.

My sympathy goes out to the Rainie family. Dr. Rainie was our family physician and friend. My parents, Bob and Diana Wilson thought the world of Dr. Rainie. He will be missed by many! A very good man.

Mrs Rainie, Scott, Robin and Jiffi - just a short note to say how sorry we were to hear about Dr. Rainie. He was loved by so many and impacted so many lives. But in addition was just a nice person who we all loved. My mother passes on her thoughts and best to you all, as does Tom. Just wanted you all to know we are all thinking of you.

Dear Dode and family: My thoughts and prayers are with you. Concord has lost an outstanding local boy. I have so many wonderful memories of Carl and Bob playing their trombones with the Golden Slippers and Nevers Band for the last 70 years. Oh, how I miss Dr Rainie and his wonderful tenor voice. Thank you for sharing him with the world. Hugs to the family.

Hearing of Bob's passing brought many happy memories of years gone by. Bob and I sang together in many productions. Always in good humor, strong of voice and action, he was delight to be with. Quite apart from his distinguished medical career, he gave much to his family and the community, including this awkward kid from Pembroke. All the best, Bert Whiittemore
