Sarah Knapp Obituary

MERIDEN - Sarah Dianne Knapp, 55, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011 at her home surrounded by her loving family after an inspiring and courageous five-year battle with breast cancer.

Sarah was born Nov. 2, 1955 in Columbus, Ohio to Paul Armstrong Knapp and Marie (Smith) Knapp. She grew up in Concord and graduated from Concord High School in 1974. She received an associates degree from Northwestern Connecticut Community College in 1976, an undergraduate degree from Lyndon State College in 1978 and a master's degree in education with a focus on mental retardation from Keene State College in 1982.

While studying for her master's degree she worked at the Brattleboro Retreat in Brattleboro, Vt., and Springfield Health and Rehabilitation Center in Springfield, Vt., before moving to Lebanon, in1982 to work for Upper Valley Developmental Services as a case manager for developmentally disabled adults. From 1985 through 1988 she was employed at Hartford (Vt.) High School as a special educator, then spent a year providing day care in her home for preschool children. In 1989, she was hired by the Lebanon School District where she served as a Special Educator at Lebanon High School until January, 2010. For several years she tutored students in math and science at Kimball Union Academy in Meriden. In the past three years she volunteered her time for cancer awareness and fund-raising events.

Sarah had a wonderful sense of humor and used it often. She was a dedicated teacher who looked to find something unique and special in every student she worked with. She also enjoyed many interests and hobbies. She was an avid flower gardener and was especially proud of her orchids, loved reading, animals (she always had two dogs), sewing, quilting, crafting, puzzles, cribbage, genealogy, pottery, photography, walking in the woods, and relaxing with family and friends at Goose Pond in Canaan. She opened her home to foreign exchange students from Spain and Japan. She also volunteered her time helping at Listen Center community suppers.

Sarah spent her remaining time in this world doing what she had to do and consciously chose not to allow the disease to dictate how she lived her life. She vacationed with family, spent time with close friends, put together photo albums and sewed quilts for her sons and brothers. She often made quips about her appearance and the side effects of her treatments, always making it easier for others to laugh with her. She lived much longer than was medically expected, in great part due to her positive attitude and spirit. Her glass was always half full and she was an inspiration to many who knew her. She, as well as her sense of humor, will be dearly missed by her family, friends, colleagues and her rescue dogs Maggie Mae and Blazer.

Sarah married Michael M. Higgins on Sept. 7, 1985 at Pierce's Inn in Etna. Together they built their house into a home on Bean Road in Meriden.

She is survived by her husband Michael of twenty six years; three beloved sons, Joshua Paul, Ryan Zachary, and Colby Jackson; her mother Marie Knapp, all of Meriden; three brothers, Paul Knapp of Meriden, Conn., David Knapp, DVM and his wife Suzanne Starr, DVM of Franklin, Mass., and Thomas Knapp and his wife Alexis Eaton of Milford. She is also survived by her aunt, Mary Carol Smith of New Bern, N.C. She was predeceased by her father in 1984 and her sister, Rebecca, in 1962.

Family and friends are invited to calling hours at Ricker Funeral Home in Lebanon, on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at the Lebanon United Methodist Church on Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, at 11 a.m. with Reverend Jill C. Robinson officiating. A reception will follow in the Church Fellowship Hall. All are welcome to partake.

To the Knapp and Higgins family. It is with great sorrow that I have just learned of Sarah's death. I had the privilege of working for her at the UVDTC in 1984. She was a terrific person and I know that the lives she touched are all the better for having known and loved her. Please accept my deepest condolences.

Dear Higgins Family:

On behalf of our family, I wanted to extend our sympathies to you all at your time of loss. Although I did not know Sarah, she sounds like a wonderful, caring and spirited woman! We do know Ryan and Colby from their days at LHS and through sports with Tyler, and Colby spent some time at our house with our daughters, Erica and Emily. May Sarah's spirit and love for you all be forever in your hearts!

Starting in the old sugarhouse, where our families first met, through years of soccer seasons, knowing Sarah was always a pleasure. There aren't many people in this world who just 'glow', but she was one. May Mike, Josh, Ryan and Colby all find the grace she would have wished her family.

Sarah and I met through the friendship of our 2 sons Colby & Nikolai in kindergarten and later the soccer fields in Plainfield and Grantham Indoor. We spent many games chatting on the sidelines of Grantham or PES (when I wasn't coaching) about kids, family, school, and later sometimes her cancer. Sarah had a wonderfully sarcastic sense of humor and rapier wit; she loved her boys (all 4) fiercely but wouldn't hesitate to straighten them out as needed! After our boys graduated from LHS our chats ended but I'll always remember them with a grin; she was a hoot and will be missed! Our sympathies to Mike, Colby, Josh, Ryan, and Marie.

I met Sarah years ago when we both worked evenings at the KUA library. It was clear right from the start that everything was more interesting and infinitely funnier with Sarah around. If she was here now she'd have a pitch-perfect comment to add to this message board - something to get us right in the heart and make us laugh at the same time. Our most sincere sympathy to your family. You couldn't be with her five minutes without knowing how much she loved you.

To Mike and 3 sons,
If ever there is tomorrow when we're not together...there is something you must always remember. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we're apart, I'll always be with you. God Bless you.

Sarah "Diane" was my neighbor, babysitter and friend. We spent lots of wonderful times together way back in the Concord days and a little bit after we moved to Franklin and then on her wedding day. We lost touch for a while but kept in contact through my mom some. We finally got to reconnect at my 40th birthday 5 yrs ago, so glad we did. Diane had a great sense of humor and truly was a genuine person. She'll be missed.

I was a friend of Sarah's during our high school and college years. I knew her as Dianne at that time. Sadly, we lost touch after college but I have always remembered her fondly. I can still hear her laugh and see her sparkling eyes. She had a wonderful sense of humor and we had many great laughs together. I was privileged to have known her. My sincere sympathy to your family.

Remembering Sarah - who said she looked just like a turtle when her hair fell out, who came back to school after her cancer returned in order to be a comfort to all of us, who earnestly told a weeping student from her advisory that she needed "to be strong for the others, I know you can do it". Remembering Sarah who shared my sense of humor, who loved her sons, who adored her husband. I will always smile when I think of Sarah, and I will smile as I pedal, in her honor and memory, in future Prouty rides.

Sarah was a dear friend and colleague whose smile could lift your spirits when you were having a bad day. Her strength and courage were an inspiration to us all. We feel blessed to have known and worked with her.

Dear Michael and Boys,
She will be in every star that shines, every sunrise or sunset, in the smell of the spring air, in the coolness of a snowflake, the leaves that fall gently to earth but mostly she will live on in each of us whose lives she touched. While I will think of her at times with sadness it will be the good times I will remember..her love of brownies, the smell of little babies, soft fuzzy things, her eyes sparkling whenever she spoke of her boys (she is so proud of you), fall days, and a job well done! Prayers love to all of you, Karen Allen

Words can not express how deeply saddened I am by the news of Sarah passing, I was a student of hers and can not tell you how her love for each and every student doesn't end when your time at LHS was done. She always had a smile a laugh or a joke to cheer you up. She will be greatly missed. With much love, Mary McDonnell
