Tracey Sweeney Obituary

Tracey T. Sweeney

Pembroke, NH - Tracey T. Sweeney, Sr., 90, of Pembroke, NH passed Monday, May 13, 2024, at Concord Hospital. Born and raised in Brockton, Massachusetts, Tracey was the son of the late Joseph K. Sweeney and Ruby (Smith) Sweeney. He had been a resident of Pembroke, New Hampshire since 1960 and had been married for 64 years to his wife, Florence M (Gillis) Sweeney.

Tracey attended Brockton High School and graduated in 1951, and proceeded to join the Navy where he served as an Aerial Engineer throughout the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1955.

Following his service in the Navy, Tracey attended New England College in Henniker, NH and graduated in 1958 with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. He worked for the State of New Hampshire Department of Transportation, Public Works and Highways, and Special Projects Division as a Civil Engineer until his retirement in 1994. Some of his accomplishments in this position included the Mount Washington Tip Top House, the Hampton Sea Wall, and the Aerial Tramways at Cannon Mountain and Mount Sunapee ski areas - as well as the installation of snow making equipment at both locations.

Tracey enjoyed coaching his sons in Concord Youth Hockey and playing in the Concord Men's No-Check league well into his 70's. In his later years, Tracey enjoyed fishing, restoring his Ford Model A's, backyard maple sugaring, and restoring and caning furniture. He was a proud Mayflower descendant of Stephen Hopkins and enjoyed sharing his love of Genealogy with all his family. Additionally, he was an avid reader and loved music, especially Jazz, Swing and any other genre of music that gave him the opportunity to cut up the dance floor.

He is survived by his wife, Florence "Gilly" Sweeney, and their four children: Joyce Daley of Pembroke, NH, Tracey "Tom" Sweeney of Canterbury, NH, Tim Sweeney and his wife Marcia Sweeney of Pembroke, NH, and Julie Giglia of Abington, MA. In addition, he took great pride in his five grandchildren and their accomplishments: Matthew Sweeney and his wife Kimberly of Westerly, RI, Tom of San Antonio, TX, Benjamin Sweeney and his wife Abby of Kittery, ME, Alexandra Daley of Concord, NH, and Emma Daley of Pembroke, NH.

Tracey was predeceased by his parents, his brothers, Newell, Perrin (Babe), and Joseph K Sweeney (Bud), and his sister June Zuber. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Calling Hours will be held on Tuesday, May 28th from 4 to 6 P.M. in The Roan Family Funeral Home, 167 Main St. in Pembroke. A Memorial Service will follow at 6 P.M. in the Funeral Home. Mrs. Sweeney, Joyce, Tom, Tim, Julie, I am so very sorry and sad to hear of Mr. Sweeney's passing and wish I had been able to attend services but just hearing of this now. I'm not sure where to begin, he was such a great and gentle man and of course, my parents loved spending time with you especially at the old Concord Budmen games. I have very fond memories of him. Wishing you all the best.

To the entire Sweeney Clan...
today was a testimony of who your dad/Gramps was, or maybe, to who you all are.
The amount of people attending Dad/Gramps´ services was amazing for a man of 90 years old! Or to the good water in Pembroke, that so many friends and neighbors were able to come out
I sit here in Lang´s parking lot, my landmark to prepare for the turn and hill climb of Brickett Hill over so many years.
Truly a beautiful service, and I commend each of you for your part in the service active or inactive for you all received and gave to the life of your Dad/Gramps.
It was an honor to share this with you all. Peace and hugs Judy (UNH)
