Welton McKean Obituary

Welton "Skip" McKean

Henniker, NH - Skip McKean (Welton) passed away on December 6 after suffering a medical emergency at home.

Skip was born in Goffstown NH on April 15, 1943 to Welton D. McKean and Ruth Williams McKean. He lived in Goffstown and Manchester and at age 13, after the death of his mother, he moved to Henniker to live with his aunt and uncle, Peter and Marion Metopoloes.

Skip graduated from Henniker High School in 1961 and worked at the First National Grocery store in Henniker during school and after graduation. In 1963 he started working part time at Ayer & Goss oil company, delivering oil at night after working all day at the store. Soon after, he fulfilled his dream of driving a truck full time and eventually started Skip McKean Petroleum Transport and began hauling fuel products for Ayer & Goss and also many other oil companies. Skip was a hard worker. He prided himself on saying he worked 56 ½ years in the same place. He sold the business in 2019 and retired.

Skip was a member of the Oil Heat Council of NH, the New England Fuel Institute, Propane Gas Assoc. of NH and the NH Motor Transport Assoc. where he was honored as member of the year in 1992 and 2019.

Skip always had a love for Mack trucks and started accumulating antique trucks and going to truck shows and parades. The best part of having the antique trucks was making friends with all the people he met at shows around the country and Canada. Skip was a member of the Granite State Antique Club of America and the American Historical Truck Society. After selling his antiques in 2020, Skip was glad they went to good homes and will still be seen by many people.

Skip was a former member of the Henniker Fire Department, a 60 year member of Harmony Masonic Lodge and a member of the Henniker Congregational church.

Skip is predeceased by his mother, Ruth McKean, his father, Welton D McKean and his aunt and uncle Marion and Pete Metopoloes which whom he lived from age 13. They were both hugely influential in his life and his work ethic.

Family includes his wife of 57 years, Carolyn Ayer McKean, son William McKean, daughter Kate (Katherine) Greene and daughter in law Amy Goss McKean. His grandchildren are Noah Greene of Goffstown, Allie McKean of Nashville TN, Jacob Greene of Henniker and Benjamin McKean of Henniker. In addition, he leaves his uncle, Calvin Williams of Weare and many cousins.

Skip had many loyal employees who contributed to his success, as well as friends and mentors who enriched his life.

A Celebration of Skip's life will be held Saturday January 11, 2025 at the Henniker Congregational Church at 11 am. The service will be followed by a reception at the American Legion on West Main St. in Hillsboro.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Henniker Rescue Squad at 216 Maple St. Henniker NH 03242 or to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health Stroke Program Fund 2-23180 Attn: Matt Hall, One Medical Center Dr. HB 7070 Lebanon, NH 03756

There will be a private burial in the spring.

I never met Skip, Im from Colombia, South America. My grandfather and his brother, started in the propane industry since beginning of 60's until we sold it in 2010. I know Skip in internet because we used to have that kind of truck tankers, same Macks and double tanks. SKIP life rebemer me too much the story of all my family. My deeply condolences for your lost.

Skippy was a one in a million person who was truly a very dear friend. I feel very fortunate to have spent many days working and being a friend of a very special family man. As Skippy would say to your meeting him" it´s good to see you Skip", he would reply "well it´s good to be seen". Skippy you haven´t changed a bit since I last saw you " like change in your pocket" he´d say. We ( I ) are going to miss him . A very special man.

Carolyn Kate Bill & Amy
So hard to say goodbye to someone you've known your whole life. I remember as a small boy on lake Massasecum Skip delivering tanks to our camp. He always took the time to say hi ask me what I was up to. Later in life as a great customer and friend a true man of integrity we shared some meals and some laughs.
He will truly be missed

Skip was legendary in Henniker, a solid citizen in our community and he will be missed. The Ayer & Goss name will live on for another generation because of him, and I'll think of him everytime I pass his old property on my home or when my home is warmed by oil from their trucks. Rest in peace. Prayers of peace and grace for all his family and friends during this time of great loss.
