Andrew Calhoun Obituary

Andrew Pickens Calhoun, Jr., age 71, passed away peacefully on Friday October 31, 2024 at his home in Savannah, Georgia. He was the son of the late Andrew Pickens and Nancy Hull Nichols Calhoun. Andy was born February 23, 1953 in Savannah, Georgia and was baptized in the Independent Presbyterian Church, a Branch of the Church of Scotland. A believer, he maintained a strong but quiet relationship with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ throughout his life. He was an 8th generation Savannahian but South Carolina was a fundamental part of his DNA. Andy was educated in local schools and was the third generation of his family to attend his beloved Clemson University. He was born in the sign of water and it's there that he felt his best. So it was natural that after college, Andy embarked on a forty year business career, all in his home town, working in the Port of Savannah with Diamond Manufacturing Company and The Atlantic Towing Company. Prior to his retirement in 2012, he served 26 years with Colonial Terminals, Incorporated who, during that period, accomplished unprecedented growth and success. Over the course of his career, he was a graduate of Leadership Savannah and served with numerous civic and maritime organizations including The Savannah Maritime Association, The Port of Savannah Propeller Club, The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway Association and was a member of the Savannah Yacht Club.

A passionate historian and genealogist, Andy and his wife compiled over 65,000 Calhoun and associated family names in their genealogy database. He traced his family history, on both sides, back to the 12th century in Scotland. He and his wife made several pilgrimages there, visiting the seat of both his father's Colquhoun ancestry in Luss, on the west bank of Loch Lomond, and his mother's MacLeod ancestry, on the Isle of Skye. Along the way they spent their time taking in Scottish history and tippling Scotland's finest Uisce Beatha, or "Water of Life." Andy gave several presentations on the Colquhoun/Calhoun migration from Scotland to Ireland to America as well. He was "Aye, a Bonnie Scot" and a long time member of The Saint Andrew's Society of Savannah. Having a touch of Welch ancestry, he was also a member of The Saint David's Society of Savannah.

Andy was extremely proud of his ancestors involvement in establishing America and was a member of The Society of the Cincinnati, The Sons of the Revolution in Georgia, Sons of Confederate Veterans, The Military Order of the Stars and Bars, and The Huguenot Society of South Carolina. In 2018 he edited and published "My Own Darling Wife: Letters from a Confederate Volunteer," a collection of letters written by his great-grandfather to his great-grandmother during the first year of the War Between the States.

He felt blessed to have experienced the Circle of Life, saying goodbye to his grandparents and parents and welcoming his children, grandchildren, and great grandchild. Andy was joined in peace by his brother, Henry Calhoun, who also passed the same day. Their lives so deeply interwined, concluded together, leaving a legacy of love and cherished memories. Andy is survived by his wife Milree Mackey Calhoun, daughters Catherine Calhoun Witek of Oxford, Michigan, Ansley Calhoun Mays (Larry) of Brooklet, Georgia, and son Andrew Pickens Calhoun, III (Rachel) of Kentucky. He is also survived by two step sons, Gerald Talbert Willis, Jr. of Hobe Sound, Florida and Michael Garvin Willis of Irmo, South Carolina, nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at Fox & Weeks, Hodgson Chapel.

Graveside Service will be 2:30 p.m., Thursday, November 7, 2024 at Greenwich Cemetery.

Remembrances may be made to Hospice Savannah, P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, GA 31416.

Milree,

I worked with Andy at Colonial oil and he was such a southern gentleman. I remember taking Aunt Barbara ( Anderson) to a party at y´all´s house and seeing Andy there and we were talking about colonial oil days!!! He was such a history buff! Loved him! So sorry for your loss!

I had the great pleasure of working with Andy for 10 years. He was so much the Southern gentleman. He was my friend and confidant. God bless you Andy. Rest in peace. I´ll never forget the kindness you showed me. My thoughts and prayers are with your family. They were always treasured by you.
