In Loving Memory of Mr. Arthur Calvin Smoak

Affectionately known as "Calvin" or simply "Smoak," Mr. Arthur Calvin Smoak was born in Savannah, Georgia to Mr. Arthur Smoak and Mrs. Annie Lou Bonaparte Smoak. He was educated in the Chatham County Public School System and graduated from Alfred Ely Beach High School.

It was during this time that Mr. Smoak met his future wife, and together they welcomed their son, Patrick Antwan Smoak.

From an early age, Mr. Smoak began working and joined the Intermarine Shipyard as a Rig Welder, becoming one of the first Black Men to hold such a position in Savannah, GA. His groundbreaking role at the shipyard was a testament to his skill and determination. Later, he joined the International Longshoremen's Association, Local 1414, following in his father's footsteps. Mr. Smoak retired after twelve years of dedicated service, known for his strong work ethic, unwavering dedication, and the respect he earned from his peers. He gave his best on the docks every day-quietly dependable, steady, and proud of the work he did.

In the community, "Smoak" became a name everyone knew. His gatherings were legendary, marked by his signature barbecue sauce, famous riblets, and his beloved "thrill" drinks-recipes no one could replicate but everyone loved. These celebrations became a tradition, bringing joy to those around him year after year.

Later, he was blessed to welcome a second son, LaRyan Gaines, who added to the pride and joy that filled Mr. Smoak's life. He held both his sons close to his heart and beamed whenever they were mentioned.

A giving and loyal man, Mr. Smoak helped however and wherever he could. His home was a place of refuge, celebration, and connection-always full of laughter and love.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents; his sister, Eddie Mae Bonaparte-Morris; his brother, Ronald Alvin Smoak; cherished siblings in South Carolina and New York; and many treasured relatives.

Mr. Smoak was deeply loved. His warmth, generosity, and laughter will echo through those who knew him-and stay with us always. His legacy continues through his children, Mr. Patrick Antwan (Donna) Smoak and Mr. LaRyan Gaines; his grandchildren, Mr. Travis Smoak, Mr. Cory Smoak, Ms. Ariana Eva Rene Gaines, and Mr. Sheldon Isaiah Lavon Gaines. He is also remembered fondly by his siblings: Mr. Edward (Shirley) Bonaparte, Mr. David Small, Mrs. Phyllis (Eugene) Artis, Mrs. Sonia (Gary) Manor, Mrs. Veronica (Reudal) Daniel, and Ms. J. Denitra Smalls. His devoted companion Yvonne Roberts, loving nephews Fredrick Jones and Antwone Mohammed, nurturing cousin and caretaker Pamela Scarver, and faithful friend Billy Spears held special places in his heart-as did his dear family from Levy, South Carolina and the countless cousins, nephews, nieces, ILA brothers, and treasured friends too numerous to name. Through each of them, his memory lives on.
