Jimmy Humphrey Obituary
Jimmy Craig "Jay Sea"/"DeDe" Humphrey, 82, surrounded by those he loved, peacefully passed away on September 25, 2025, in Savannah, Georgia, the city where he was born and spent most of his life.
Born on October 2, 1942, in Savannah, Jimmy lived a life marked by service, faith, and deep devotion to his family and community. He dedicated over three decades (1969-1999) to the Savannah Fire Department, rising through the ranks to become a respected captain. His commitment to protecting others never wavered, and even after retirement, he remained connected with his fellow firefighters – gathering often for breakfasts and lunches that kept their bond strong.
Jimmy's life was deeply rooted in faith. Since 1963, he had been a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Temple. There he served as Chairman of the Deacons and as a member of the deacon body. He also served as a Sunday School department director and teacher at Rivers Edge for twenty years and lent his voice to the church choir. His unwavering belief in Jesus Christ as his Savior guided every aspect of this life. Those who knew him take great comfort in knowing that he is now rejoicing in Heaven – healed and whole – praising Jesus with the angels. In addition to his spiritual leadership at Calvary Baptist Temple, Jimmy was an active member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows beginning in 1971. His dedication to this international fraternal organization culminated in his service as Sovereign Grand Master (2013-2014). In this role he traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe on behalf of the Sovereign Grand Lodge. Along the way, he forged lifelong friendships and left a lasting impact on all of those he met.
Jimmy's love for travel extended beyond his fraternal duties. He especially cherished time spent exploring new places with his family. Among his most treasured memories involved two cross-country camping trips taken with family including his grandchildren – adventures filled with laughter and discovery that became beloved family lore.
He is survived by Joyce Humphrey, his devoted wife of 63 years; their daughter Monica; their son Edward (Cindy); grandson Taylor McMasters; granddaughter Brooke Humphrey; brothers Johnny Humphrey (Anne), Jerry Humphrey (Jenny), and Richard Henderson (Kim); Cindy's mother Libby Page; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and cousins who held a special place in his heart. 2
Jimmy was preceded in death by his mother Ludelia Dowdy Humphrey Henderson and stepfather Richard Henderson, Sr. Their memories were precious to him throughout his life. Those who knew Jimmy will remember him for his warmth, humor, and boundless generosity. He never met a stranger and had the uncanny ability to make everyone feel welcome. Whether it was sharing stories over coffee or offering encouragement during difficult times, Jimmy's presence brough comfort and joy.
He loved deeply – his family, friends, fellow firefighters, lodge brothers – and found happiness in simple pleasures: a good pair of Birkenstocks or a Dairy Queen Mint Chocolate Chip Blizzard could always bring a smile to his face.
Jimmy leaves behind a legacy of faith and love that will continue to inspire all who knew him. Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we rejoice knowing that he is now at peace in God's eternal embrace.
May his memory be a blessing and bring comfort to all who mourn him today – and may we honor him by living with the same kindness. strength, and unwavering faith that defined his remarkable life.
