Mary Elizabeth Watkins

1946 - 2025

Our beloved Mary Elizabeth "Liz" Watkins, 79 passed away on Monday, August 25, 2025 at St. Joseph's Hospital, Savannah, Georgia.

Liz was born on February 28, 1946 in Ludowici, Georgia. She was the daughter of the late Fleet and Mattie Tyler.

Liz attended and graduated from Walker High School, Ludowici, Georgia where she was a basketball player and participated in several other extra curricular activities.

She was united in holy matrimony to Willie Watkins and to that union one daughter was born Teresa Watkins. In later years, Liz also welcomed to her family a second daughter, April Hughes.

She began studying under the nursing program at Memorial Hospital. However, she later worked in customer service at the following: Church's, Kmart, St. Joseph's Hospital, and Kroger's. She also worked in housekeeping, and was a private caregiver, and had a willingness to share with others.

Liz became a faithful member of Central Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend William Daniels where she served for many years. She had an immense love for gardening and flowering. Liz enjoyed baking as well as the fellowship of family and friends.

Liz was preceded in death by her parents, Fleet and Mattie Tyler; her sisters, Loretta Griffin and Florine Williams; and her brother, Sammy Tyler.

Liz will forever be loved and remembered by her two daughters, Teresa Bishop (James) of Washington, DC and April Hughes of Savannah, GA. She is also survived by one sister, Erma Summers of Brunswick, GA; a brother, Richard Tyler (Janet) of Orangeburg, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and close friends.
