Betty remains alive in our memories and is my model for aging gracefully. I often think of her when we are pulling together a social gathering. Betty could laugh even when a cake slid sideways into a new shape.

To all who loved Betty: A true lady has left behind all of her friends and those who had the pleasure of knowing her. Betty was beautiful in every way. I will miss her more than words can say.

Betty Leech (and her late ex-husband Ward) were in my family's life as long as I can remember. My mother, Mary, came to 804 Chestnut to keep house for Luman and Stella Leonard in 1938, and met Betty and her family (who were next door, I believe). Betty was two weeks younger than my father, and kept in touch with birthday cards for my sister and me until we were young adults. We saw her at the courthouse when we went to pay our taxes and I saw her helping sort music for the community band when I was a HS and college student. Oddly, it was only in the last decade or so that I realized that Mrs. Shurtz--long held up by my mother as an organ/piano teacher without peer--was her sister. Betty--and Pauline--long an organist at St. John's--were examples of the principled, learned, and cultured of our community that we would all do well to emulate in this modern age. I treasured my times dropping in on Betty and the painted cat cards I rec'd from her as well as her humorous and kind words at my mother's memorial service in 2010. In the end, my condolences are really a thanksgiving for her earthly life.

Betty has been in my life always. I looked up to her as a wonderful, loving, person to be a model towards my life, loving Jesus and all humanity. Beautiful inside and out, love unending. She and Pauline were given by their parents, Sam and Ora, the correct meaning of living a life God wants us to live, in a world of turmoil. I'll miss her. Someone we all would benefit to follow in our own lifetime. Love you, Betty, June

Remembering Aunt Betty, as I used to call her, with great affection. Many fun times staying at her house when I was very young and playing with the cats. We would go down to Aunt Ora's to visit and eat cheese and crackers. A very special and outstanding woman who will be remembered by many.

Betty Leech..... quite a lady in every sense of the word. Our family was richly blessed to have known her and be recipients of many kind notes, birthday cards, and food. She gave of her love and talents with such a humble spirit. Her outlook on life was a lesson for all who knew her. Our sympathies to her family and the Scherbels.
