In the early morning hours of Mother's Day, Sunday, May 14, 2017, Larry Butler passed away peacefully at the age of 85, surrounded by his loved ones. Larry was best known within the community as a country songwriter and musician, whose roots traced back to his hometown of Belton, Texas, where, starting in the 1950s, his ascension to the Texas music legend known as the "Country Gentlemen" from Cut-N-Shoot, Texas began. In a career that spanned over 60 years, where he played countless shows with country music's best known stars, his music touched all those who heard it, because Larry Butler, above all else, played for the love of the music and the crowds who came to hear it. Larry entertained his fans until the very end, playing a show with one of his oldest friends, Willie Nelson, to a packed theater just weeks before his death. Larry's music was only outdone by his contagious smile and Texas-sized generosity that he shared with everyone from all walks of life. But beyond his music, Larry's proudest legacy is the family he and his wife of 56 years established. They include his three daughters Tammy Sklar and husband Ricky; Tina Martin and husband Wayne; Teresa Butler and fiancé John Youngblood, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was also survived by his brother Roy Lee Butler, sister Billie Kirkley, and sister-in-law Rita Jones. Larry was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Pat Butler, son Larry Joe, his father Leander, mother Eula Mae, brothers LB and LC, and sisters Wanda Reynolds and Shirley Smith Moon. Visitation will be on Friday, May 19, 2017 at 11:00am at the First United Methodist Church in Conroe, Texas. The funeral service will follow, beginning at 12:00pm. The graveside service will be directly after the funeral service in Garden Park Cemetery in Conroe, Texas.

I am so sorry, I did not know that Uncle Larry had passed. At least he is home on heaven now with his family. No more pain. He touched my heart, the love he showed to my husband Ray. His memory and his voice will far outlast us all.
In deepest sympathy

I was saddened to just find out that Larry has passed away. What memories this man left me with. I can't count but I certainly remember the Wednesday and Saturday nights we danced the night away to Larry and the boys music at the Esquire Ballroom on Hempstead Hwy. This was in the late 50's and early 60's, the days of real, true country music. Larry could always be depended on to supply that in spades. When Larry and Pat opened the place on E. 105 we all moved north to continue the good times there. Larry was a joy to the world. To Tammy, Tina and Teresa, I know you all have a vision of the greatness of your dad, however, if any of us had a way to measure Larry's true greatness and the joy he brought so many it would shock us all. Rest In Peace Larry, you will be missed.

Larry Butler is a one of a kind family man, friend and entertainer that touched the lives of so many people with his genuine love and friendliness.
If Larry and Pat called you a friend, then that's what you were! God allowed us the privelge of having them in our lives and I thank him for that blessing.
Me and Larry had a bond that never went unbroken even after a lifetime of friendship and I love him for being the man he was to me and his family. He is a legend in so many ways. Thank you Larry for all of the great memories and most of all thank you for loving me enough to be there in the good times and the bad.I pray everyday that I will wake up and you are still with us, but in reality you never left. You and Pat will always be right here in my heart and the hearts of all the people that loved you so much. I am happy you and Pat are together again because I'm your friend and know that's what you wanted but just like your family I MISS YOU EVERYDAY! I I LOVE YOU BOTH.

I met Larry in Conroe way back in the 70's. I had to meet him as I always danced with his brother LB, the best dancer in the world, who told me he was Larry Butler's brother. I stopped in one day to meet him at his place in Conroe.

We used to go nearly every Sunday when I was very young and hear him sing at Magnolia Gardens in Northeast Houston. He was a great singer and a fine person. The Butler family have been in my life for 50 years and they seem like family to me. My husband Jerry Hodges played drums for Larry for 16 years. I can still see Larry turning around and patting that foot to tell Jerry to pick up the beat. I had the pleasure of knowing Pat's mom, and watching the girls grow up, get married and have their own kids. Larry loved his music but above all was his family. Him and Pat shared a great love for each other and family. I still remember the little polite boy when he was 12 that would get up and sing with his dad, you could see the worship in each of their eyes. I am so blessed to have known them all. My heart aches with the family, I miss them all so bad. RIP Larry, Pat, Larry Jr., Mom, and Diane.

I met Larry and Pat Butler when I worked for Wimpy Luce in Magnolia, back in the late 70's. Larry could have become a star, but he loved his family, and wouldn't tour like he needed to in order to "make a name" for himself. He and Pat were a wonderful couple. They made country"real" for me.

Thinkin' it Over
It's odd but there is one thing most people like to do.
To spend a while beside the grave of some one that you knew.
You do it when you've time enough to make a quiet ride.
To see the fleecy clouds above and watch the shadows glide.
You think of things he did and said, and of the ways he had.
And now to think that he is dead. It makes you feel plum sad.
It brings the old days back again, you live them one by one.
You think of things that happened then, and what you should have done.
They say there'll be a Judgment Day when dead men rise again.
So I suppose he'll have to stay just where he is till then.
But then you reckon that the one who made the world knows best.
He takes them when their work is done and lets them have their rest.
And when at last our strength has failed we make our last long ride.
We leave this world and take the trail across the great divide.
So when it's time to make the change we'll go where they have gone.
We'll meet them on another range somewhere in the beyond.
Farewell my friend and rest in peace.
