Jo E. (Roberts) Alvey, age 84, a lifelong resident of Crow Mountain, departed this life on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, for a great reunion with our Savior and loving family, who have gone on before her.
Jo was born on Crow Mountain on March 12, 1940, to the late Harley Doyle and Ellen Mariah Bowden Roberts.
Jo and her family were members of the Mars Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church for many years.
She graduated from Pottsville High School in 1958 and attended Arkansas Tech for a year. She retired after 38 years as an employee of the State of Arkansas having worked at Arkansas Livestock and Poultry Commission, Arkansas Department of Health, and the Arkansas Department of Human Services. She was also a retired poultry farmer for Tyson Foods and has raised cattle with her sons, Steven and Mike Alvey.
Jo spent many years as a volunteer and received the JC Penny Award for her volunteerism having coordinated the Pope County Resource Fair. She received a letter and certificate from former President Bill Clinton for her work with the River Valley Crisis Incorporation.
Jo was a lifetime member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 2283, a 20-year member of the FOE Aerie Ladies Auxiliary Post 3928. She loved to work in her flowers, cook for her family, needlework and bird watching.
At a young age, Jo started working with her parents, brother, Alvin Roberts and sister, Martha Jones, cleaning up Bowden Cemetery. Her father, Doyle Roberts and brother, Alvin, were members of the cemetery board with others and Martha and Jo became members and have continued as caretakers, bookkeeping and all services needed, volunteering many hours. After Martha retired, Jo and her son, Mike Alvey, continued all services needed to keep Bowden Cemetery up to date.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Alvie Oscar and Ida May Jordan Bowden; paternal grandparents, Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Osborne Roberds; two brothers, Alvin Nelson Roberts and Doyle Richard Roberts; the father of her children, Leon Alvey; a sister, Martha Jones; and many other loved ones.
Survivors include her three sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Denise Alvey of Atkins, Michael and Gaylynn Alvey and James and Sally Alvey, all of Crow Mountain; a daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and C.H. Puckett of Crow Mountain; three grandsons, Reed (Kelsey) Alvey, Josh Alvey and Jesse Alvey; two step-grandsons, Cody (Breanna) Teeter and Tyler Robertson; six granddaughters, Latisha Puckett (Mark Center), Amy (Dallas) Lee, Loren Alvey, Jessica Alvey, Brooke Reynolds-Alvey and Alyssa (Ridge) Benjamin; two step-granddaughters, Brittney Teer and Julie (Tyler) Myers; 12 great-grandsons; six great-granddaughters; and many other relatives and friends.
A private graveside will be held in Bowden Cemetery with the the Rev. Johnny McCoy officiating under the direction of Shinn Funeral Service of Russellville.
Memorials may be made to Ladies Aux. of the VFW Post 2283, 4162 N Arkansas Ave, Russellville, Arkansas 72801, the FOE Aeries Ladies Aux. 3928, 3016 E 16th St, Russellville, Arkansas 72802, or donate stuffed animals to the Pope County DHS Foster Care Division or Pope County Sheriff's Office, for children they work with that are in a crisis.
