Doris Burnisky Obituary

Doris DuBois Burnisky

AGE: 92 • Haddonfield

Doris DuBois Burnisky, 92, longtime resident of Haddonfield, N.J., died peacefully on February 13, 2016, at the Voorhees Care and Rehab Center, after a lengthy illness.

Doris Amelia DuBois was born March 16, 1923, in Woodbury, New Jersey, the daughter of Josiah Ellis DuBois, Sr. and Amelia Ayles DuBois. Doris spent her growing up years in Woodbury and Ocean City, New Jersey. As a teenager Doris worked in her father's store, the DuBois Drug Store on Battersea Avenue in Ocean City. She worked the soda counter and then was promoted to patent medicines. She loved the ocean and the Jersey shore. She attended school at Woodbury High, graduating in 1940 attending college prep courses at Pennington. The following fall she began studying at the State Teachers College at Glassboro, N.J., now Rowan College. Upon graduating her first teaching job was for three years at Mt. Ephriam at the age of 20.

On March 30, 1946, she married William Jackson, a veteran of World War II, 82nd Airborne, 505th, at Valley Forge, PA. The couple lived at Glendora, Camden and then Haddonfield, New Jersey, where they raised two sons, William P. and David B. Jackson. Doris taught Kindergarten for many years at area schools, including Barrington and at Johnson School in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. For many years she was a member of the Haddonfield United Methodist Church.

After a divorce she married Enoch C. Burnisky on August 5, 1972, a veteran of World War II and a boilermaker for Inductotherm Corporation. They lived at the home in Haddonfield for 25 years, where she retired from teaching in 1978.

Doris had been a resident of the Cherry Hill Convalescent Center and most recently Voorhees Nursing and Rehab since 2003. She enjoyed the daily activities, crafts, bingo, church services and following Phillies Baseball. She attended a Phillies ballgame the year the Phillies won the World Series in 2007, and attended another in 2010. She was preceded in death by both husbands, her brothers and sisters, Josiah DuBois, Herb DuBois, Madison DuBois, Louis DuBois, Earl DuBois, Mary Oldenburg, and Elise Pratt. She is survived by her children and extended family, William Jackson (Dale Gody-Jackson), Wilmette, Illinois, David Jackson (Margaret), North English, Iowa, Robert (Cindy) Burnisky, Carol Salerno and six grandchildren, Ben (Ali) Jackson, Sara (Shawn) Bybee, Dawn Marie Salerno, Stephen Burnisky, Christopher Burnisky and Hannah Burnisky.

Arrangements are being made by Alloway Funeral Home, Merchantville, N.J. The family will hold a private Celebration of Life. Burial will be at the Beverly National Cemetery, Beverly, N.J., along side her husband Enoch.

I remember Aunt Doris with fondness. I enjoyed visiting her in the nursing homes where she lived. I learned a lot about her from her obituary that I did not know.

Mrs. Burnisky was my very first teacher and one I will never forget. She taught with such a kind heart and in a way I will not soon forget. My memories of over 40 years are of singing Mothers Day songs she taught and blowing out the candles on the birthday cake. We loved her! She inspired so many and because of her influence I teach my own students today. We share our prayers with your family and want you to know that she was one unforgettable lady. May God Bless you during this time of loss.

We loved Doris as a teacher at Johnson Elem. She was so good to her students. I can picture our conferences with her. She loved our three children and they adored her. God bless her family and friends at this time. Nancy and Nick Frederick
