George the senator (because he looked very diplomatic), was a frequent visitor when I worked at StocksBakery in Philadelphia. His presence would light up the room. He was a person that could never be forgotten. May he Rest In Peace.

Dear Doris and Family
We're truly saddened to hear about George (10/22). We have fond memories of you and Geoge's parents.
I used to see George at Aunt Charlotte's or Jerry's (VW) where we would chat for a while. He always had a big, engaging smile. The last time we saw him, he was using a cane and said, "Now I'm a Cannanite". What a great sense of humor!
Please accept our sincerest sympathy.

Over the years I met George a few times at basketball related events. Perhaps many people are not aware that in March of 1947 George was considered the most outstanding high school basketball player in the State of New Jersey. George was the leading scorer in South Jersey that year and he established a one game scholastic scoring record at Camden Convention Hall. That record stood for many years. George became a South Jersey basketball legend when he led tiny Merchantville High to the State Champion and that legend was firmly established when George helped Merchantville to stun powerful Weehawkin High School in the State Finals. Weehawkin was favored to defeat Merchantville by 20 points. In the old Merchantville High School there was a photo of George and his 1947 team in the foyer of the old school. We walked past that photo each day while attending school at Merchantville. In the late 1940s George was the leading scorer in the United States while attending a small college in Delaware. He later served with honor in the US Navy during the Korean War. George added to his legend by playing professionally in the NBA. In 1955-56 George's Philadelphia Warrior team won the NBA championship. George teamed with such greats as Paul Arizin, Tom Gola, and Neil Johnston. The few times that I met George over the years he impressed me with his humble nature. Little did he know how much he was admired for years by the students at Merchantville High. To us George represented the underdog who could accomplish the unexpected. When George led his 1947 Merchantville High team to victory over powerful Weehawkin, the New Jersey scholastic basketball world was stunned. George's old Merchantville teammate, Ted Joya, once told me that George Dempsey, for his era, was the best basketball player to come out of South Jersey. We send our most sincere condolences to George's family. He was a great guy, tough competitor, and a humble gentleman.

Dear Dempsey family, hearing about George today, brought back a flood of memories that I will always cherish, we both had to go through a tough bout of physical therapy after our surgeries, and it was his strength, perseverance, and friendship that saw me through it all. If he (as I suspect) was as kind and wise with everyone else, as he was with me, than the world is now less for it. Prayers for God's blessings, for you and yours.
Sincerely,
Gene Mancini

Dempsey Family, Please accept my sympathy and condolences on the loss of George. Kindly excuse my language in this moment and let me say as most know, he was one Hell of a basketball player. I had but one evening of personal competition against him in an unplanned scrimmage late one night in the Merchantville High gym. George "took me to school" on the court with his unforgetable moves and shots unlike any I've experienced then and since. As best I know he was always the gentleman on or off the court as he certainly was in our scrimmage. Just a brief encounter, but thanks for the lasting memory. Rest in peace George.
