George Weber Obituary

George Spang Weber, MD

AGE: 83 • Woodbury

George Spang Weber, M.D.

Dr. George Spang Weber of Woodbury, New Jersey passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2015 at the age of 83 years from complications relating to dementia.

He is the beloved husband of Gunnlaug (née Dahlen). Loving and devoted father to his three daughters, Ann Weber - Ammar, Karin Lynn Weber (who passed away on October 2, 2014) and Helen Weber-Cetkovic. He also dearly loved his sons-in-law, and five grandchildren and one great grandson.

George was born in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1931 to Helen Spang Weber and Lawrence Edward Weber. He grew up with his parents and younger brother Dr. Edward Lawrence Weber (retired oncologist who currently lives in Seattle, Washington) in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania and graduated from Wyomissing High School in 1949. George was an accomplished track and field athlete, and has won the Penn Relays. George went on to earn his bachelors degree at Princeton University in 1953 and then to Harvard Medical School where he earned his medical degree. After completing his internship and residency in Boston he served in the United States Army in the rank of Captain, and was stationed at Fort Rucker, Alabama and Stuttgart,Germany as a medical doctor. After completing his Army duty he studied under Dr. Michael DeBakey at Baylor University Hospital in Houston, Texas in vascular surgery.

George practiced vascular and general surgery at Underwood Memorial Hospital in Woodbury, New Jersey where he pioneered aneurysm surgery at that hospital. George also practiced surgery in the hospitals at Bridgeton and Elmer, New Jersey.

George was passionately dedicated to the preservation of the environment and advocated in its defense through hands on activism and generous financial support. Throughout his entire life he enjoyed the great outdoors as an avid sailor and skier. In his youth he climbed the Matterhorn in Switzerland and led bicycle tours through Europe. In his later years George trekked The Himalayas and Mount Kilimanjaro. He white water rafted down the Colorado River and in Costa Rica, walked The Great Wall of China, Sailed the Caribbean and Adriatic Seas, travelled to Easter Island and Machu Picchu, safaried in Africa, road a camel at the pyramids of Egypt and walked the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem. There was hardly a place on this beautiful planet that he did not visit.

While we will dearly miss our beloved husband, father and grandfather, his passionate emotions, his tender heart and vibrant spirit, and robust love of life, we know George is now enjoying the infinite landscapes of heaven with the almighty God whom he loves.

Visitation for family and friends will be Tuesday, May 12th, 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM at The Presbyterian Church @ Woodbury, 67 South Broad St., Woodbury, NJ 08096, where services will begin at 11:00 AM. Memories of George as a pre-school neighbor on Woodland Road and a fellow '49er at Wyomissing are vivid as he was an outstanding personality. His presence was always enjoyed when he attended reunions with his beautiful wife Gunn. It was a privilege to know him. I send my heartfelt condolence to the family. Sincerely,
Geraldine Lamm Peek
