William Matt Obituary

On September 28 2004. Age 65. Of Gloucester City. Surrounded at home by his loving wife of 40 years Anne Marie (nee Wright). Devoted father of Karen F. Shaw (husband Kenneth) of Florida Kristine M. McCormick (husband William) of Atco and Michael A. Matt (wife Erin) of Marlton. Beloved grandfather of Madison Matt and Kaylee McCormick. Also survived by loving nieces and nephews.
Bill was born and raised in Philadelphia and graduated from Dobbins Vocational High School. He and his parents moved to Gloucester City in 1957. He served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years and then worked at New York Shipyard and the Philadelphia Navy Yard before becoming a self employed salesman.
Bill has been extremely active with the Gloucester City Little League for 37 years serving as a manager for 27 years treasurer for 33 years tireless fundraiser and served graciously in any capacity where he was needed. In Addition Bill served as a Gloucester City Councilman a Gloucester City Zoning Board Member and a proud fireman for 7 years with Gloucester City Department Station 51. He was a member of the local Victory Building and Loan Association and was Vice-President of the Gloucester City Swim Club.
He coached midget football with the late Bill Flynn for 12 years and served as President of the Carmen Palmiero Basketball League for 3 years. He was a former member and past secretary for the Sportsmen A.C. Club in Gloucester City and has been a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus # 674 Council in Gloucester City for 38 years as a honorary 3rd Degree Life member. On April 26 2002 Bill was honored by the Gloucester City Lions Club and Gloucester City Rotary Club as 'Citizen of the Year' at a dinner at Degenhardt's Restaurant.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend his viewing on Friday evening from 6 to 9 pm and Saturday morning from 9 to 10 am from the McCANN-HEALEY FUNERAL HOME: 851 Monmouth Street (at Brown Street) Gloucester City. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 am from Saint Mary's R.C. Church: 426 Monmouth Street Gloucester City. Interment with military honors New Saint Mary's Cemetery Bellmawr. Family requests that memorial donations be made in Bill's memory to Msgr. Lucitt's Needy Children's Christmas Fund: P.O. Box 87 Gloucester City NJ 08030 or Aid to the Aging c/o Saint Mary's R.C.
