Gertrude "Trudy" (DeWitt) Schnautz
Evansville, Ind.
Gertrude "Trudy" Eileen (DeWitt) Schnautz, 84, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away Sunday, November 3, 2013 at the Villages of Hamilton in Newburgh, Indiana.
Gertrude was born on January 23, 1929 to the late Clarence and Tillie (Kiehl) DeWitt in Akron, Ohio. She attended Saint Boniface grade school and graduated from F.J. Reitz High School in 1947.
Gertrude met the love of her life, Richard Joseph Schnautz at the age of fifteen but did not date him until he returned from the Navy when she was eighteen. They were married February 18, 1950 at Saint Boniface. She enjoyed home decorating, fashion and staying in touch with current events as well as family gatherings. Gertrude was a wonderful mother and grandmother and was very active in her grandchildren's athletic activities and academic endeavors. She was a devout Catholic, faithfully prayed the rosary daily and was a long time member of St. Theresa Catholic Church. Together Gertrude and Richard raised six children, Kathleen (Thomas) Godeke- Diehl of Evansville, IN, Cherri Schnautz of Louisville, KY, Stan Schnautz of Evansville, IN, Tina (Michael) Robertson of Westfield, IN, Angela (James) Hynd of Atlanta, GA and Chicago, IL, and Kurt (Lynn) Schnautz of Evansville, IN. Gertrude is also survived by 18 grandchildren, Clinton Godeke, Wesley, Grace and Fitzhugh Mullins, Cody and Nathan Schnautz and Carlee Tiemann, Shelby and Erin Schmidt, Kelly and Madeline Robertson, Brodie, Megan and Austin Hynd and Lily, Ellie and Addie Schnautz and Brian Diehl; 3 great grandchildren, Noble Meadows, McKenna Robertson and Sophie Schnautz; by her sister, Liz Wannemuehler and 9 nieces and nephews.
Gertrude is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Richard; her parents; brothers, Clarence, Jack, Richard DeWitt and sisters, Mary Lucille DeWitt and Mabel Buchanan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, November 7, 2013 at St. Boniface Catholic Church, 418 North Wabash Ave., Evansville, IN with Father Kenneth Herr and Father Ted Tempel celebrating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Friends may visit from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Ave., Evansville, IN where a rosary will be held at 7:30 PM.
Friends may also visit from 9:30 AM until service time at the church on Thursday.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 5250 Vogel Rd., Suite A, Evansville, IN 47715 or the Tri-State Food Bank, 801 E. Michigan St., Evansville, IN 47711.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Owensboro Mercy Hospital, the Villages of Hamilton Pointe and Gentiva Hospice. The family would like to extend a special appreciation and thanks to Dr. Alan Mullins for all of the love, support, care and medical guidance he provided to Gertrude during the past five years.
