Born on St. Patrick's Day 1948, he was a 1966 North High School graduate.
Music was his life. Teaching was his passion. By the age of 13, he was an accomplished guitar player and, along with his younger brother Pat on drums and friend Don Lee on bass, played the most popular night clubs in Evansville. Their exquisite costumes were lovingly sewn by their mother; big sister Mary was their biggest fan. The Moore boys still continued to captivate audiences with their musical prowess every time they had the opportunity to play on stage together.
While completing a Bachelor of Musical Science degree in Los Angeles, Greg apprenticed with one of the most respected producers in the history of music, R.A. 'Bumps' Blackwell. He had the opportunity to co-produce Bob Dylan, Thelma Houston, and many other artists. At Bumps' funeral, he was honored to be a pallbearer alongside Quincy Jones, Casey Kasem and Lou Rawls, with Little Richard officiating the Memorial Service.
Greg played guitar with the best in the Music Industry, including Frank Sinatra, Louis Prima, and The Diamonds. He traveled the world, met presidents and dignitaries, and even played for the Queen of England. Returning to his hometown in the late 1980s, he rented space in Newburgh and hung his sign advertising 'Greg Moore School Of Guitar.' It wasn't long before he had quite a roster of future guitar players. It was at this time he began work on his lifelong dream of writing an instructional book, geared to the 'serious' player. He completed Guitar Played Moore Effectively, augmented with completely original music scores, written and recorded by him. The General Manager of WNIN Public Broadcasting contacted him about formulating a prospective television series focusing on his unique guitar method, which encompasses the educational aspect of learning to play the guitar by teaching students to actually read music. In addition, a video series from this production was distributed all over the world in conjunction with the book.
The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation, in association with Governor O'Bannon's office, launched the Safehaven Reachout Program, initially geared to provide activities for 'latchkey kids.' Guitar being the 'World's Most Popular Instrument,' Greg's method was a natural fit for the program. Every year for the 7-year duration, thirty-five children each received a guitar, case, book, and 32-weeks of instruction, free of charge. An entrepreneur, familiar with the success of the program in Evansville, contracted him to provide a similar program for his Alma Mater in Marshall, Illinois, which continued for the past ten years.
Greg's ultimate goals were to complete another book and as a mentor, continue to strive to positively impact all aspects of life through his private teaching. He dedicated himself to a lifelong commitment... to be the best he could be through the love of God, his family, and his friends. An inner peace that had taken a lifetime to acquire was with him over the past few months. He truly had come to believe "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."
He was preceded in death by his father Raymond Bud Moore and stepfather Gilbert Cook.
Greg is survived by his wife of eight years, Bobbi Warren-Moore; son, Matthew Moore of Nashville, TN; mother, Geneva Cook of Evansville; sister, Mary Scheller and her husband, David, of Evansville; brother, Pat Moore and his wife, Sharon, of Newburgh; stepchildren; stepgrandchildren; nieces; and nephews.
In lieu of a funeral, a Memorial Service in celebration of Greg's life will be held on Sunday, August 31 at 7 p.m. at Alexander Newburgh Chapel, officiated by Pastor Randy Hopkins. Friends may visit from 4 p.m. until the service begins. Greg's wish is to be cremated, his ashes scattered on a mountaintop over his beloved Emerald Bay in Lake Tahoe where he and Bobbi were married.
Condolences may be made online at www.mem.com. Arrangements be Alexander Newburgh Chapel, 5333 State Road 261.

We are so sorry to hear of Greg's passing. My daughter and myself took lessons from Mr. Moore at Marshall High School. I cannot say how much we appreciated his kindness. His sharing for the love of guitar will be missed. He accepted us, both young and old, into his classroom.
Know that your family is very much in our prayers now. A true gift of God is with him now!

Dearest Pat and Sharon:
Our thoughts have been with you over these past weeks since your brother's passing. We didn't know him, but we have known you and your family over many past years.
We also know that there has to be a huge void in your lives without him. No one knows why one so Young is taken. Perhaps God in his Heavenly Home wanted to be surrounded by beautiful Music and young angels~
Gentle hugs to all of you...with love from all of us~
May the memories of the wonderful times shared with your brother, help erase the sadder more recent ones.
Love never ends, it just changes~
Most sincerely~

Some knew him as the boy he once was, some knew him as the man he became, some knew him as a friend, always giving, husband, dad, some as son, some as brother, others as cousin; but for all who knew him are blessed as he was a gift from God.
Godspeed my friend Greg, you will be missed...Lynn

I remember Greg from when I took guitar lessons from Eddie Krietemeyer in the early 60's. I was 6. He and Pat would come in once in a while when I was taking a lesson. I believe He and Pat were playing in a band then. I never really met him personally, but I have always looked up to him as one of the premier musicians in Evansville. I even bought a guitar at his music store. I am so sorry for your loss. He has definitely left a legacy in Evansville. We will keep Gregs family in our prayers.

So sorry for your loss. Greg and I went to grade school together. (Cedar Hall)
He taught me the chord progressions to one of the first secular songs that I ever sang. (White Sports Coat) That goes back a few years.
I have fond memories of Greg and the Moore family.

I took guitar lessons from Greg Moore at Washington Middle school in the sixth grade and also my little sister took lessons from him. He was such an inspiration to me and my sister because he knew of our talent and embraced it with all the help that we needed. Even though at the time I didn't like the guitar he knew that there was something special in me that he took the time out to help me. I will be forever grateful for his caring attitude and never letting me give up. I am keeping his family in my prayers and even though I am at school my heart is with you. Until we meet again

Matthew, your father meant the world to me, He was larger than life. His modesty was unparalleled. His influence immeasurable. I know its been awhile but trust me brother, when i say there will never be another Greg Moore. I dont have the words to describe thevoid. Your father and i were friends for a very long time. He let me in closer than he let most people and i appreciated that. I watched you grow up and your father was the biggest influence in my life for a decade. I know you remember the fishing trip where your dad hooked up with that big huge largermouth while i baited your hook! Those were priceless memories. I am deeply saddened by the loss and i cant even begin to process how emtpy my heart is. Your father was one of my nearest and dearest friends. I hope this finds you and you are beaming with pride as you were the apple of your fathers eye. (You know ol J.C. knows!) Hang in there (Bubba) and accept my deepest sympathy!

i dont really know where to start...
we all lost a good friend. I first took lessons from Greg probably 20 years ago, and like so many others I'm sure, Greg made me feel like I was his best and favorite student. He was an instructor, yes, but he felt like a proud big brother, one you were so eager and happy to please. Later on, Greg asked me to help him teach at Lincoln Elementary. Greg taught me to understand the guitar, but he also taught me how to teach. He was a dear friend and words cannot express how much he will be missed. He was one of those people in your life you thought would always be there... in some sense i guess he always will be....
i love you greg, will miss you dearly

I took guitar lessons from Greg since July 1994 (over 14 years). Greg and I had many laughs and good times, and some tears as well. He deeply cared for me and my family, especially my wife (Mag), my son (Carl), and both my parents. Because of Greg I have deepened my knowledge of the guitar neck and have performed solo many times in front of audiences. Greg, I'll just bet God would enjoy listening to you play FLY ME TO THE MOON. May you rest in peace Greg. I'll miss you my friend.

Greg, studying music with an instructor of your caliber was enlightening, but stopping in to chat, with a friend as dear, was always a calming and refreshing stop. You have left a tough void to fill. You will be remembered.

We are very shocked and saddened to learn of Greg's passing. My son Austin who is 11 has been taking guitar lessons from Greg for a little over a year. He thinks Greg is the best. Austin is very proud to have been a guitar student of Mr. Greg Moore. He will be greatly missed and always remembered.
