Jack Ost Obituary

Jack Norman Ost

Jack Norman Ost, 82, of Bloomington, Indiana, passed away peacefully on December 27 at Hospice House in Bloomington.

Jack was born July 20, 1938, to Edith (Zimmermann) and Norman Ost, in Evansville, Indiana. He graduated from Bosse High School in Evansville, and studied law at Indiana University. Jack married Nina Warren in 1960; they had three children, Eric, Karl, and Sean.

While he worked variously in sales, metal production, band instrument repair, and gourmet coffee roasting, throughout his life Jack was dedicated to music, especially jazz. He was a cornet player, a composer, and the bandleader of Cafe Jazz Society (www.cafejazz.org). Late in life, he enjoyed researching Indiana jazz history. Jack corresponded with friends and music lovers around the world, and was delighted last year when Cafe Jazz Society's music was featured on a radio program in Paris.

Jack was a doting grandpa, a planter of tulips and chile peppers, a connoisseur of barbecue, and a lover of family gatherings. He was an independent thinker, and always enjoyed a friendly, intelligent debate about politics, sports, or the price of a cup of coffee.

Jack was preceded in death by Nina. He is survived by sons Eric Ost, Karl Ost, and Sean Breeden-Ost; daughter-in-law Denise Breeden-Ost; grandson Glen Breeden-Ost; sister Joan Ouellette and brother-in-law Bob Ouellette; and sister-in-law Mary Lee Warren.

No memorial services will be held at this time. Memorial contributions may be made to Hoosier Hills Food Bank or Hospice House of Bloomington; condolences may be sent to Karl Ost, 2390 N. Getty's Creek Rd., Bloomington, Indiana, 47408.

Allen Funeral Home and Crematory is handling the arrangements and online condolences, photos and memories may be shared with family and friends at www.allencares.com

I miss Jack. We first met when we both played in the Faculty Five at Indiana University. We had played together in various ensembles performing both in clubs and in many different homes of the many jazz aficionados who resided in Bloomington. In recent years, Jack was unable to play anymore, but we spoke regularly about his knowledge of the jazz scene in Indiana (historical and contemporary) mixed with discussions about food and politics. I knew that Jack's health was failing when he talked about the difficulty he had in walking even down to the end of his driveway. But he never revealed to me when he went on hospice and several weeks went by without us talking. When I next inquired, he had died. I still feel bad that I didn't act sooner both to say goodbye, but also to tell him what a great friend he had been. In Jack's death, we have lost a great resource on the history of jazz and jazz musicians in Indiana. Rest in peace, Jack.
