Retired miner Mr James Bakewell (88), a resident of Mansfield Manor Nursing Home, and formerly of Stanton Hill, Sutton, was cremated at Mansfield after a service at the crematorium chapel. Born and educated at Sutton, Mr Bakewell, who had lived locally all his life, worked as a miner at Silverhill Colliery for 45 years until he retired. In his younger years he was a successful amateur boxer, having fought regularly at Sutton, Guernsey and Belfast, and was a member of Nottinghamshire Ex-boxers' Association. He also had a keen interest in all sports and enjoyed spending time with his family. Mr Bakewell, who died at Mansfield Manor Nursing Home, leaves his son, Alan, daughter-in-law Margaret, sister Mrs Lily Butler, four grandchildren, Mark, Sean, Simon and Scott, and six great-grandchildren, Hope, Joel, Oliver, Morgan, Grace and Billy. Mourners were Mr and Mrs A. Bakewell, Mr and Mrs M. Bakewell, Mr S. Holt, Mr and Mrs J. Hall, Mr K. Hall, Mr D. Hall, Mr and Mrs R. Wood, Mr P. Wood, Mrs Lilly, Mr B. Booth. Floral tributes were from Mrs and Mrs A. Bakewell, Mr and Mrs M. Bakewell, Hope and Joel, Mr and Mrs S. Holt and family, Mr and Mrs J. Hall, Darren and Kelly, and Mrs L. Butler. Donations received are for The Salvation Army. The service was conducted by the Rev J. Pulman, and arrangements were by Co-operative Funeralcare.
