He was originally born in Taffy, Ky., but had lived most of his life in Evansville. In 1958, he began his career in the production department at WTVW-Channel 7, and then received his first "on-the-air" job as a disc jockey (DJ) at WPCO Radio in Mount Vernon, Ind. He then joined WJPS where he became known as the host of "Nite Sounds of the Jimbry Show." He went on to work with several other DJs in the area at the Evansville Community Center on Saturday nights (Dave Wood, Jack Comer, and Byron Zint) as well as sock hops in the Surf Club, and the Tri-State Sunday Center in the coliseum. Jim became the track announcer at the Tri-State Speedway in the 1960s. In 1963, he was honored as "Disc Jockey of the Month," where the industry honored one radio personality from across the nation each month. He then went to WROZ moving from rock 'n roll to country! In 1967, he was credited for bringing Evansville's first "Shower of Stars Show" to Roberts Stadium, where he had the privilege of hosting country stars such as Dolly Parton, Mel Tillis, Tonya Tucker, Porter Wagner, Dick Clark and many others. He hosted the original Star Route 7, on WTVW-TV 7 every morning from 7 to 8 a.m. between 1969 and 1972. In 1972, he officially ended his radio and television career, working part-time into the 1990s with stations WYNG and WKDQ, playing the popular "Country Classics." He then moved into a completely different role as a food broker, where he became co-owner of Utley-Embry, Inc. up to his retirement in 1991. In his later years, one of his hobbies was having daily coffee with his buddies at the Coffee Shop and more recently, the Carousel.
He was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, and he loved his dog, Buffy Sue. He had an extreme love and passion for the radio industry, and helped to shape the sounds of the rock 'n roll airwaves from rock to country. He was very instrumental in accomplishing numerous "firsts" during the early radio and television years.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, Girthon Grant Embry; his mother, Ethel Gertrude Embry; and his grandparents.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary Ann; son, Jimmy D. Embry Jr. and wife, Molly, of Orlando, Fla.; daughter, Vicki Darlene Boedeker and husband, Bob, of Evansville; grandchildren, Lauren Embry, Paige Embry, Kaylan and Kate Stedman and Michael James Boedeker; brother, Bill Embry and wife, Diane, of Piney Flats, Tenn.; sister, Joan Wolverton and husband, Dan, of Deltona, Fla.; sister-in-law, Carole Utley of Evansville; several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation and gratitude for the exceptional care provided by the staff at St. Mary's Medical Center, particularly the intensive care unit, during his final hours.

Dearest Mary Ann and Buffy Sue:
We are very sad for your loss. Jim was a very wonderful man who touched lives in many ways. I am sure he really didn't have a clue how special he was to all of us music lovers. His knowledge of the artists and the songs was refreshing and very interesting. Loved hearing him, anytime, anyplace.
He was kind enough to play a special song on the air, so I could record it for my Mother's funeral. It was titled.."somewhere just beyond the moon'...by Tex Ritter.
I know that Jim and Tex are somewhere just beyond that big full moon that has been shining on us these past evenings. I will always think of 'him' when I see that full moon in the sky~
You and Buffy take care of each other now. I know you were the rainbows in Jim's life. He never never forgot to mention his two special ladies in his life, when we e-mailed each other. It was our privlidge and pleasure to know him~
I read once: "death is not sad, if the life was used well".
Jim's life was 'used well'...and his passing is and will always be sad~

I remember waiting up on Saturday nights for my older sister to come home from the community center and show me the new dance steps, it was a magical time when it seemed all was well with the world. I would listen to Mr. Embry on the radio and remember my parents yelling upstairs to "turn that down" these are little things from our past that we think about from time to time and smile, Jim Embry is a part of our history. To remember him is to remember our youth. God Bless his family, and bless him for everything he did for our community and for raising a wonderful daughter that I call friend.

I am so sorry for your loss. I just want you to know that he was one of the nicest people. I spent many an hour at the Community Center and he was always so friendly and always smiling. He's the one that challenged me to join one of the ping pong tournaments, he was a lot of fun. Of the four years I spent at Central, I remember my time at the "Center" with laughter, and he was a large part of the fun and laughter. He's in a good place, and in good hands. Suzie Porter McGhee

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Embry, He was and Icon of the 60’s much like Dick Clark. I met him at the center when I was a teenager and went to all the dances he sponsored and did the music. Great times that I will never forget. I also had a chance to visit with him at the WJPS station on one occasion. I met my wife of 43 years at one of the dances, we always said if not for Jim and his sponsorship of the dance we would never been together.

Jim was a great DJ "back in the day." His talent was matched only by his wonderful personality. He is a part of my warm memories of dancing at the Center and the great time we all had there. Jimbry was a trailblazer.

So many great memories of Jim at WJPS. As I was growing up in the Tell City area Jim was one of those Evansville DJ's that was the best. In a few years I started my radio advertures at WTCJ and thanks to Jim he was an inspiration. My best to the family.

I grew up listening to Jimbry on radio and watching his tv show. He has always been an inspiration to me as a broadcaster and it was an honor to work with him at WYNG and guest host his great oldies show from time to time. We had so much fun the time Jim went to Branson to do his show from the Charlie Pride Theater. My condolences to Mary Ann and the family. I will always miss "The Country Gentleman."

I will add our buddy Jimbry was a talented writer who spent countless hours researching the old west. I told him he had a Pulitzer lurking in
his talents. He always looked forward to our occasional WJPS DJ reunion sock hops. He will be missed.

Jim knew me as Bob Druin's kid sister and as Joan's classmate at Bosse. I knew him as the guy who "babysat" with me over the phone after he went off the air while I worked at the answering service and was scared to be there alone. He was a grea person and I don't think he ever knew how much he helped me make it though those lonely hours on the overnight shift. Gob be with his family.
