John Buthod Obituary

John Lieuen Buthod

Evansville, Ind.

John Lieuen Buthod, 92, died on August 24, 2017, at Deaconess Hospital Gateway.

He was born in Austin, Texas, August 12, 1925, the son of Victor and Louise (Brightman) Buthod. With his family, John moved to Evansville, Ind., in 1939.

John was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, James M. Buthod; and his sister, Harriet McCool.

John and Sue (Dannettell) Buthod were married on August 9, 1952, and celebrated their 65th anniversary on August 9th of this year.

He is survived by his wife, Sue; sons, Robert Buthod (Laura), James L. Buthod and John Thomas Buthod; grandsons, Mitchell Buthod (Erica) and Stuart Buthod; sister, Susanne Buthod, Sister of Providence; and many nieces and nephews and their families.

John was a graduate of Reitz Memorial High School, in 1942, and Evansville College in 1948. He did graduate work at Tulsa, Oklahoma University.

John joined the U.S. Navy during World War II and served aboard LST 464 in the South Pacific. He was very proud of his service as a medical corpsman aboard a uniquely outfitted Hospital LST and helped many wounded servicemen during the Gulf of Leyte campaign. During the Korean conflict, he was recalled to service and was able to tour the country as part of a medical research team studying the long-term effects of flight on World War II pilots. John was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church

Following his graduate studies, he worked many years as a petroleum engineer for Gallagher Drilling Company and enjoyed the camaraderie of the oil business.

He was a long-time volunteer for the Evansville area Boy Scouts and was awarded the Diocesan Bronze Pelican and the National St. George medals for his service. For many years he gave his time aiding the Little-Sisters-of-the-Poor feeding the residents.

After retirement, he spent many happy hours working as a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity of Evansville. As a member of his beloved Concrete Crew, they helped construct hundreds of homes in the Evansville area.

Visitation will be on Sunday August 27, 2017, from 2 to 7 p.m. at Ziemer Funeral Home, 800 S. Hebron Avenue in Evansville, Ind.

A mass of Christian burial will be at Good Shepard Catholic Church, 2301 N. Stockwell Rd. at 10 a.m. Monday, August 28, 2017, with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. Father Ted Tempel officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park following the service.
