Matthew Timmel Obituary

Matthew Charles Timmel

Newburgh, Ind.

Matthew Charles Timmel, 78, passed away peacefully with his wife and dogs by his side, Thursday, November 9, 2017, at his home. He was born February 14, 1939, in Evansville, to Curtis and Carman (Sensmeier) Timmel.

Matt was a true community servant. He retired from Evansville Fire Department after 33 years of service in 1994. He started his career as a Firefighter, Paramedic, Captain and then retired as District Chief. Matt was instrumental in starting the Special Ops Division at EFD which included rope and water rescue, and the HAZMAT teams. Matt joined Newburgh Volunteer Fire Department upon his retirement in 1996, serving 17 years as a Firefighter, Captain and Assistant Chief until 2015.

Matt had a love for the Ohio River. He was an avid fisherman and boater. Matt owned Osborn Boat and Motors and worked for East Side Marine in fiberglass boat repair after his retirement. He was a founding member of Evansville Thunder on the Ohio and served as Race Pit Chairman for 30 years. He was a member of the Newburgh Parks Advisory Board and Parks Board for many years and was instrumental in caring for the Newburgh river front boat dock.

Matt was the life of the party and shared his contagious laugh with his family and friends any chance he got.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Matt is survived by his wife of 31 years, Tammy (Roland) Timmel; daughters, Jodie Buckley (Stan), Julie Nicholson; three grandchildren, Grant, Alexa, and Logan.

The family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses and health care workers that cared for Matt over the years.

A funeral service with Full Fireman's Honors will be held 11 a.m. Monday, November 13, 2017, at Titzer Family Funeral Homes, Simpson Chapel, 510 W. Jennings Street, Newburgh, Ind., (812) 853-8314. The Reverend Father Joseph Ziliak will officiate.

I worked with Matt on the Newburgh Park Board where he always had great input and insight for the good of our town of Newburgh. My first memories of Matt were at the NEWBURGH Firehouse where he was such a great presence and in particular at the Christmas parties there. Loved his robust laughter!

I worked a Deaconess ER and we all liked and respected very much. He was easy to work with and helped many, many times. I will remember him with a smile and my heart goes out to his family. He was always a true gentleman.

Matt was my captain when I first went on the squad and ambulance at Fire Station #1. He and Donnie Hoffman were my mentors. I learned so much about firefighting and paramedicine from both of them. We also laughed a lot. God bless you Matthew... and thank you.
