Samuel Alfred Gander, 70, of Mt. Vernon, passed away on Thursday, July 21, 2011 at the Deaconess Hospice Care Center. He was born on April 26, 1941 in Evansville, IN to Sam and Arlevia (France) Gander.
Sam had perfect attendance for 11 years of school missing only for an accident that broke his leg when hit by a car at the age of 6. He was a 1959 graduate of MVHS. Sam was a member of the Mt. Vernon M Club and their Hall of Fame. He lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. Sam was a member of the 1958 MVHS basketball team that lost to Central by one point in the Evansville Sectional Finals (on a bad call). He remained a lifelong friend of his coach, Jim Solomon. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Sam retired from GE Plastics in 2001 where he worked as a Technician for over 39 years. He served in the Indiana National Guard. Sam enjoyed bowling and was an avid golfer, making his 1st hole in one at Breckinridge in 2010.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ralph Gander; and his sister, Jean Lilly.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Betty (Lurker) Gander of Mt. Vernon; son, Bart Gander (Tena) of Evansville; grandson, Slade Gander; and a special grand dog, Bella Gander; sisters, Evelyn Rabe (Fritz), and Mary Jean Prevo, all of Evansville; Judy Benner (Glenn) of West Chicago, IL; several nieces; nephews; and cousins;
Services will be at 10:00 am Monday, July 25, 2011 at Schneider Funeral Home, 512 Main St. in Mt. Vernon with Rev. Tim Ahlemeyer officiating and burial to follow in Alexander Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1:30 pm to 6:00 pm Sunday, July 24, 2011 at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First UMC, the Mt. Vernon M Club or Deaconess Hospice Care.

Dear Betty and Family, I am so sorry for Sam's passing. I prayed for more time. But, does one really Know. It was a delight to be out at the center with your family. I met more of you everyday. Betty, I pray for your peace in the loss of Sam. And I pray for the Scientist to keep this on the priority list, to find a cure for Mine and Sam's disease. Im here if you ever want to talk. Allison and her Mom Kathy are such great people. And me coming out and seeing all of you, has brought Allison and I so close. Im blessed for this.
