William 'Bill' Fischer

William "Bill" Fischer, 88, died Saturday, December 2, 2017, at I.U. Health Bloomington Hospital after a long illness.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Barbara Jeanne (Blood); and his children, Gail (McDaniel), Jane (White) and William Thomas Jr., Tom's wife, Mary and his twin granddaughters, Courtney and Caitlin.

Bill, a life-long Presbyterian, was born April 29, 1929, in Columbus, Ohio. He grew up in Evansville, Ind., where he graduated from Bosse High School.

He went on to Indiana University where he was an active member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and earned an athletic letter as student manager of the I.U. football team. It was an honor he would always cherish and instilled his love of I.U. athletics. He and Barbara tried to watch or listen to every I.U. game that was telecast—regardless of where the Fischers were living.

Additionally, Bill and Barbara loved to travel throughout the United States and Europe and made long-time friends in Germany and Cornwall on the British coast. They particularly appreciated escaping the cold to spend long winter vacations on Jekyll Island in Georgia where golf, hunting for sand dollars, and long walks on the beach ruled the day.

In the late 90s, Bill retired from his position as clinical manager at Kalamazoo Ophthalmology and they moved to Bloomington. But before retirement, he earned the status of Fellow in the American College of Medical Group Administrators (MGMA). His many years of business experience lead him to become a mentor and then president of the Bloomington chapter of SCORE, an organization geared to providing advice and counsel for start-up business. Along with SCORE, Indiana University offered Bill his "dream" job as a starter and ranger at the I.U. golf course. He made loads of friends (and a few non-friends) on Sunday mornings as he strived to keep the golfers on time and moving through the course.

Bill served in the Indiana Air National Guard during the Korean War, was an honorary Kentucky Colonel, and former Boy Scout Troup Master and member of the Kalamazoo Kiwanis.

A memorial service is his honor is planned for Friday, December 15 at 3:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Bloomington.
