William was born in Posey County, Ind., to Elijah and Daisy Turner. He retired in 1988 after 45 years as a repairman for Whirlpool. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and traveling, was always ready to lend a helping hand, taking someone to an appointment or the doctor and he was a caring visitor to the ones in nursing homes.
William was a 49-year member of Church of God Mission and he attended First Church of the Nazarene in Mount Vernon. He was a board member of the Church of God Mission and a founding member of the Pentecost Campground.
William is survived by his wife of 12 years, Thelma (Brakie) Turner; one son, William W. Turner and his wife, Vicki, of Mount Vernon; three daughters, Mary Lou Mercer and her husband, Damon, of New Harmony, Kathy Beyer and her husband, Alan, of Mt. Vernon and Karen Kuhn and her husband, Keith, of Mount Vernon; a sister, Ruby Poole of Mount Vernon; brother-in-law, James Alldredge of Mt. Vernon; stepchildren, James Barnes of Evansville and Regina Gray of Mt. Vernon; stepson-in-law, Bob Gibbs of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Melanie Ries, DaWayne Mercer, Jeremy W. Turner, LuAnn Simpson, Melissa Beyer, Keith Aaron Kuhn, Kevin Kuhn and Kara Kuhn; stepgrandchildren, Robert Mattingly, Darrell Mattingly, David and Jeff Barnes, and Matthew and John Gibbs; 12 great-grandchildren; 15 stepgreat-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife of 49 years, Ruth Lou (Braden) in 1994; an infant brother; brothers, Oscar and Gerald Turner; three sisters, Mary Alldredge, Betty Walker and Martha Carroll; and one step-daughter, Connie Kaye Gibbs in 2006.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at Austin Funeral Home, 1330 E. Fourth St., Mount Vernon, Ind. The Revs. Leon Clark and Meyers Hyman will officiate. Burial will be in Bellefontaine Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m., Friday, June 1, 2007, and from noon until service time Saturday, June 2, at Austin Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Church of God Mission.
