Nancy Byrom Obituary

In Loving Memory of Nancy Haas Byrom
September 8, 1943 – May 15, 2025
Nancy Haas Byrom, 81, of Mansfield, Ohio, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2025.
Born in 1943, Nancy grew up in Ohio and graduated from Parma High School's Class of 1961. She went on to attend The Ohio State University, graduating with honors with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a Bachelor of Education degree, with a focus in German studies,
in June 1965. That same year, she married the love of her life, Richard Byrom, Jr., beginning nearly six decades of faithful partnership.
Nancy began her career teaching German for two years at Worthington High School before her early married life took her to the capitol beltway and overseas, supporting Richard's service as a
U.S. Air Force officer and dentist-from Columbus to Washington D.C., to England, then stateside again to Galion, OH, in 1972. As a devoted mother, she raised four sons-Mark, Scott, Jon, and Eric-while managing a bustling home life filled with sports practices, school activities, musical pursuits, and church commitments.
Eventually Nancy returned to teaching and gave over 20 years of service to the Galion Public Schools, impacting countless numbers of students. She was especially gifted in working with Special Education students and taught at North Elementary School, Galion Middle School, and Galion High School.
Nancy impacted people in many ways beyond her teaching. She served as a Cub Scout den leader, PTA member, a member of the League of Women Voters, a long-standing member of her Garden Club, and also helped plant Galion Alliance Church. She hosted many children for amazing Vacation Bible School weeks at her home, assisted with youth group, and served as the long-time chair of the church's Missions Committee. She mentored many young women and was a true prayer warrior, faithfully interceding for her family, friends, and missionaries around the world.
Nancy was known for her listening ear, kind heart, and impeccable organization. She sent cards for every occasion and never missed a chance to offer encouragement. A lifelong Ohio State Buckeyes fan, avid reader of mystery novels, and enthusiastic gardener in her younger years, she lived life with purpose and joy.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, Richard Byrom Jr.; her four sons and their families:
Mark (Debbie) and their daughters Kaelah (Scott) Steenstra, Jocelyn, and Laura
Scott (Lisa) and their children Joshua, Emma, and Caleb
Jon (Marsha) and their children Julia, Mariella, and Curt
Eric (Laura) and their children Ethan, Talia, and Travis
She also leaves behind her beloved sisters Linda McHugh (Terry) and Barb McGrew (Dan); sister-in-law Beth Haas; Richard's siblings Tom Byrom (Judy) and Linda Walter (Dan); and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Kurt and Catherine Haas, her brother Robert (Bob) Haas, and her in-laws Richard Sr. and Marjorie Byrom.
Nancy's legacy of love, prayer, and service lives on in the lives she touched. Her faith colored everything in her life and all who came in contact with her, and her unceasing prayer commitment to her family and friends continues to be felt. Even while enduring a long battle with rheumatoid arthritis and kidney difficulties her smile was contagious and her kindness showed through. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A Celebration of Life service for Nancy will be held at Grace Fellowship Church, 365 Straub Road East, Mansfield, OH 44903, on Tuesday, June 17, at 3:30 p.m. The family will receive guests before the service, beginning at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to The Alliance Great Commission Fund (undesignated) at https://secure.cmalliance.org/give.
