James Agler

Napoleon - James L. "Jay" Agler, 66, of Napoleon, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center. In keeping with his generous spirit, Jay was honored to be an organ donor, giving the gift of life to others.

Born December 30, 1958, in Defiance, Ohio, he was the son of the late James W. and Carolyn (Lulfs) Agler. Jay was a 1977 graduate of Napoleon High School. He married Terri Canape on September 14, 1984, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Napoleon.

Jay served the community for 28 years with the Henry County Highway Department, where he retired as the Superintendent. He also previously worked for Flatrock Township and Lee Groll Tree Trimming.

A dedicated public servant, Jay was a volunteer firefighter and first responder with the Flatrock Township Fire Department for 40 years, attaining the rank of Assistant Fire Chief. He was proud to receive the local Hometown Heroes Award.

Jay was deeply involved with the Henry County Fair, serving as both president and vice president of the Fair Board and as a board member for over 25 years. He received the Ohio Outstanding Fair Supporter Award, the Friends of 4-H and was inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame. To generations of young exhibitors when he served as a Jr. Fair Advisor, he was affectionately known as "Uncle Jay." He was also a strong supporter and advocate for the new events center at the Henry County fairgrounds.

He loved helping others, gave freely to his community, and looked forward to spreading joy and Christmas spirit each year serving as one of Santa's helpers.

Jay is survived by his loving wife, Terri; sons, Cody (Alysia) and Tyson (Kali); grandchildren, Bella and Nixon; siblings, David Agler and Penny (Jamie) Henderson; and niece and nephew, Nick and Katy Henderson and mother-in-law Ruth (Wentworth) Like.

He was proceeded in death by grandparents Lester "Cap" and Marguerite Agler and Henry and Edith Lulfs.

Visitation will be held Sunday, October 12, from 1-7 p.m. at Rodenberger-Gray Funeral Home, Napoleon, Ohio, where a Fireman's Last Call Service will take place at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Napoleon, Ohio. Interment will be held at St. Augustine Catholic Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the Henry County Event Center.
