James Slow Obituary

Deep Run, N.C. - Rev. James William "Jim" Slow, 88, passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2023 at UNC Lenoir in Kinston. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Edward and Martha Slow, son, James Tribune Slow and brother, Donald Slow.

Jim graduated from Bryan High School in 1954 where he excelled in football, basketball and swimming. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1955-60 and it was during that time that he married the love of his life, Helen Oelke. They were married on December 23, 1955, at St. John Lutheran Church in Defiance, Ohio.

He was ordained as a Lutheran Minister in 1966 and served in the ministry for 57 years. He was a pilot who was commercial and twin-engine rated, loved to read, loved antiques and woodworking. But most of all, Jim loved to witness and led many people to Christ.

Jim is survived by his wife of 67 years, Helen, children, Lori (Kenny) Olson, Peshtigo, Wisconsin, Baird Slow, Deep Run, North Carolina, Julia (Denny) Dominique, Defiance, Ohio, Jennifer (Chris) Grubbs, Deep Run, North Carolina, and daughter-in-law, Paula Slow, Alexandria, North Dakota, brother, Steven Slow, Green Bay, Wisconsin, seven grandchildren, Javan (Jayme) Slow, Janelle (Ben) Anderson, Amanda (Jim) Kunst, Trudi (Erick) Skedsvold, Rebekah (Brett) VandeWalle, Aaron (Jenni) Olson and Andrew (Kiahna) Olson and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 31, 2023, at Deep Run Original Free Will Baptist Church in Deep Run with burial following in the church cemetery.
