Betty Williamson Obituary

Betty Williamson of Pensacola, Fla., passed away on Jan. 13, 2009 at her son's home in Crestview after a long and courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). She was born to Alphus and Audrey Bradley on June 6, 1935 in Florala, Ala.

She is survived by her husband of 11 years, Edward L. Williamson; a son, Joel Givens of Crestview, daughter-in-law, Sandra Givens; stepdaughter, Rebecca Williamson Ballesteros (husband Tino) of Merced, Calif.; brothers, Austin (wife Lyvonne), Bobby (wife Margaret) of Crestview, of Crestview, Robert (wife Geri) of Auburn, Wash.; sisters, Inez Degraaf and Jeanette Mims of Crestview and Peggy Horton (husband Jim) of Mary Esther; grandson, Daniel Givens (wife Michelle) of Austin, Texas.

She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including Ricky Givens, for whom she was a caregiver for several years.

She was predeceased by her first husband, William C. "Pat" Givens, her parents, and her oldest son, William Danny Givens.

Betty was a graduate of Crestview High School, Class of 1954. She enjoyed cooking, quilting and travel and delighted in making new friends. She was a beautiful, creative, spirited and totally unselfish lady who charmed everyone she met. She will long be remembered as a caring lady who was concerned about everyone else's problems before her own. Survivors will long remember her ever optimistic comment, "This too shall pass." Even while wracked by this unrelenting disease, she maintained her high spirits, her sense of humor and mischievousness, and if cooking was in progress, she kept her ear tuned to the kitchen, frequently sending in instructions and suggestions.

The family is very appreciative of all who have visited, called or written to express concern during this most difficult time.

Funeral services will be at the First Baptist Church of Crestview on Friday, Jan. 16 at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at Live Oak Memorial Park Cemetery, Crestview.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in honor of Betty to the ALS Association, Florida Chapter, 3242 Parkside Center Circle, Tampa, FL 33619 or First Baptist Church of Crestview, 171 Hickory St., Crestview, FL 32536 or Covenant Hospice, 2223 S. Ferdon Blvd., Crestview, FL 32539.

Arrangements are under the direction of Whitehurst-Powell Funeral Home in Crestview.

Ed, and family,
My heart goes out to you. You all have to be feeling that very strange mixture of grief and relief. When we watch one we love so dearly suffer, we ache for the relief we know that they need, and when it finally comes we have to face that unnerving season of grief ahead of us. My prayers are with you, may God give you his amazing grace and comfort as you go forward. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers here in Merced.

I was so sorry to hear of the passing of your mother. I remember her from my childhood as one of the sweetest ladies I would ever know. She was always so beautiful and I loved her smile. My deepest sympathies and prayers go out to you and your family and I'm so sorry she had to suffer such a horrible disease. It's comforting to know that she was such a woman of faith. Even through all these years, your family has always been very special to me.
