A. Licciardello Obituary

Dr. A. Thomas Licciardello
Anthony Cleofonde Thomas Licciardello died peacefully on October 3, 2023, at his home in Cambridge, MA, at the age of 99.
The son of Sicilian immigrants Domenic and Katherine (Arcidiacono) Licciardello, Tom was the first of his family to experience higher education. He commuted to Tufts College from his supportive Italian enclave in Lawrence, MA, graduating in 1943 with a Bachelor of Science. He immediately enlisted in the Navy Reserve, and then went on to Harvard Medical School, followed by a residency at Mass General Hospital. There, he met Evelyn Gertrude Billings, who became the love of his life. They married in the summer of 1949. Compelled by the Navy, he completed his residency quickly and deployed to Japan, where he served as a doctor during the Korean War. Upon his return, Tom and Trudy settled in Trumbull, CT, where they raised four children and Tom practiced first internal medicine and later cardiology over a fifty-year career at Bridgeport Hospital. Tom became a doctor when there was little to offer those with heart disease, and as the field advanced, he kept up. When he was mid-career, he became board-certified in cardiology and eventually directed the first coronary care unit at Bridgeport Hospital. Tom retired in 2004, at the age of 80, and he and Trudy moved together to Cadbury Commons Assisted Living in Cambridge, MA in 2007. He lovingly cared for her until her death in 2014 from Alzheimer's Disease.
Blessed with intelligence and curiosity, Tom embraced the discipline and the challenge of thinking diagnostically. Even late in life, when he was hospitalized with a new ailment, he took pride, and some frustration, in more than once pinpointing the cause of his troubles before his doctors could.
Tom loved life. In his final decade, he wrote poetry to explore his grief over Trudy, his amusement with life, and his experience of aging. He also continued his lifelong love of making and listening to live music. A performer since his teenage years, Tom began each day at a piano, playing old jazz standards for the pleasure of any who wanted to come by the lounge. As his mobility and vision suffered, he relished visitors' simple observations of the outside world. A month before his death, Tom sang enthusiastically along to a visiting jazz combo. A week before, he declared his dinner delicious.
Tom will be missed by many, but most acutely by his brother, Michael Licciardello and his wife Krys Bart of Arizona, his children, Jere Licciardello and his wife Janet of North Carolina, John Licciardello of Rhode Island, Anne Licciardello of Massachusetts, and Jane McIntyre and her husband James of Massachusetts, and by his eight grandchildren and his two great-grandchildren. Burial will be private. A memorial celebration will be held in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Doctors Without Borders at https://donate.doctorswithoutborders.org/secure/donate or The Cambridge Symphony at https://www.cambridgesymphony.org/donate .

I was thinking of the Licciardello family so I googled to see if the doctor was still alive. My mother (Esther) knew Trudy from Radcliffe days and my family always stopped for a few days to stay with the crew in Trumbull on our summer trips to Massachusetts. I have many fond memories of time spent with the four kids. I last saw Dr. and Mrs. L. in Pennsylvania in the late 90s. My condolences to the family on the death of Dr. Licciardello. I remember both Tommy and Trudy as warm and decent people.

Grampy was always the smartest and calmest person in the room. For a man so accomplished, he had no ego.

The most vivid memories I have of Grampy are mornings on Cape Cod in the summer. Walking downstairs to the dining room he would always be reading the newspaper in his white rocking chair next to the open window overlooking the yard with a nice morning breeze coming in. He was always so relaxed and content with life.

Rest in peace Grampy. I know you are playing the piano for Grammy in heaven right now. We love and miss you.

Hello to the Family of Dr. A. Thomas Licciardello, My name is Bette-Jean (Mastroni) Crouse formerly of Bridgeport Ct. and a former patient of Dr. Licciardello whose office was in Stratford. I only skim through the obituaries online every couple of months because going on 80 years old most of my friends are gone already. However, I just came across your loved one's obituary and I could not get over that I am reading it on October 16, the birthday of my first son, Anthony, on October 16, 1960. Although Dr Licciardello was not my Obstetrician he was my medical doctor and helped me through Rheumatic Fever as a young girl even coming out to the house to treat me. He didn't have to go out of his way at the hospital that day but he had so much concern for me that he came to see me in the maternity ward at Bridgeport Hospital. That meant so much to me. He teased me about my baby boy having the same name as he. I just thought I would pass this on to the family as it seems somewhat coincidental that I would read his obit on my son's birthday. May God send you all heavenly hugs.

Tom was a fine doctor and an even better man. We were colleagues at Bridgeport Hospital and he was always a gentleman. I can attest personally to his love for his wife.

I didn't know Dr. Licciardello, having lived neighboring towns but recall his name. After reading his parting tribute, I wish I had known him and want to add what a remarkable human being, dedicated physician and specialist, fulfilling his military engagement in Japan and ALL he contributed to his wife, family, community, friends and patients! The planet mourns the passing of such an incredible MAN. Thanks to him and his family.
