Alan Gordon Cherry Jr., age 92, of Glen Head, New York, passed away on December 18, 2016.
In addition to his beloved wife, Margaret Hoegl Cherry, Gordon was predeceased by his sisters, Marion Dillon and June Bruns. Gordon will be remembered by his children, Jennifer Cherry, and her husband, John Emanuel, of Fairfield, Alan G. Cherry, III and Tim Cherry, both of Glen Head; two cherished grandchildren, Everly and John Emanuel; his nieces, Caroline Marren and Jacqueline Dillon.
Born in Quincy, MA, he was the son of the late Alan and Blanche Cherry. Gordon proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. He graduated from college after the war and taught at Clemson University's Architecture School. He continued his career in New York City as a draftsman for Edward Fleagle, junior designer for John Graham and Company, a senior draftsman for Neumann and Taylor, and was a director at Emery Roth and Sons before his retirement in 1992. He helped shape the skyline with his involvement of some of NYC's famous construction projects including the World Trade Center, the Citicorp and Pan Am buildings.
A family man at heart, Gordon relished spending time with his wife, children, extended family, and dear friends. The consummate host and talented bartender, he made many martinis and pina coladas for his family and guests while vacationing in their Hampton Bay summer home. Fishing with his father in law, grandpa Hoegl, squeezing his wife and children into his Triumph TR3 for road trips, taking in a classic film, listening to classical and jazz music, and remembering his Scottish heritage were all his passions as well.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, December 23, 2016 from 4-7 p.m. in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, in Fairfield Center. A private interment will be held in Calverton National Cemetery.
