Al resided in Bridgeport and Trumbull for more than 50 years. He was employed by The Bullard Company for more than 40 years, both prior to and following, his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After retiring, Al relocated to Sun City West, Ariz. with his wife Mildred where they have lived since 1986. Al loved to travel, and enjoyed golfing and bowling. He had a great sense of humor and was a kind and helpful friend and neighbor, as well as a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Al is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 35 years, Mildred; daughter, Kathe Mate of Riverside, Calif.;, siblings, Janet Gault of Oviedo, Fla. and John Mate of Fairfield; daughter-in-law, Geraldine Mate of Allentown, Pa.; Mildred's children, Jacqueline Coen and Keith Schauwecker of Bridgeport, Doreen Newman and son-in-law, Chris of Shelton; Mildred's four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Al is also survived by several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and many cousins in the U.S., Canada, and Hungary. Al is pre-deceased by his son, Kevin Mate and parents, John and Jennie Mate. A Memorial Mass will be held at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Sun City West, Ariz. and a Veteran's Memorial Service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Hospice of The Valley in Surprise, AZ. Al's loved ones know that now he is at peace, enjoying the coolness of ocean breezes, the beauty of desert sunsets and vast starlit skies from Heaven!
