Carol Samuelson Obituary

Carol Samuelson
Carol Detzler Samuelson, "Doc Sam", passed into glory on Wednesday, August 25, 2021 surrounded by family and in the comfort of her home. Carol is survived by her loving and devoted husband Scott, their two daughters, Erika and Katrina and their husbands, Mike and Zach, her 6, soon to be 7, cherished grandchildren who affectionally referred to her as "Mimi". Carol is also survived by her father and stepmother, Wayne and Judy Detzler, mother-in-law Natalie Samuelson, brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Cathy Detzler, and several brothers and sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews. Carol was predeceased by her mother, Margaret Detzler. She was active in the church and a devoted and well-loved educator for the Fairfield Public School District. Carol was a faithful servant to God and always lit up the room when she walked in and talked about Jesus. All of Carol's students referred to her as "Doc Sam" and loved her dearly. Outside of teaching, Carol mentored many people. Carol's cancer journey began five years ago, and she had an incredible team at Smilow Cancer Hospital of Oncologists, nurses, staff and so many others who walked with her and provided excellent care. Towards the end of her cancer journey, her hospice team of nurses through Constellation Agency provided care and support to Carol and her family. Carol was a devoted wife, an excellent mother, a lover of Jesus and people. She impacted the lives of many and her legacy lives on. She will be missed dearly. "To live is Christ. To die is gain."

Our thoughts and prayers are with Scott, Erica, Katrina, Mark and Wayne and family at Carol's passing. We are so glad we got to know Carol and to hear of all those she has blessed. Carol is in the presence of her Lord and Savior and we'll see her again some day.

As one of the many colleagues gifted to be in the same department and school as Carol, there is little that I can add to the litany of superlatives necessary to characterize what she brought to the classroom each day. Her steadfast assertion, that teaching requires loving your students, will forever echo in the minds of every student who had the great fortune of having her and every teacher who saw her eyes light up when she talked about, "her kids". While we playfully engaged in a tug-of-war between the value and merits of AP European History vs. AP United States History, she challenged me to produce the most engaging experiences for our students. Having the benefit of being in her room for her "send-off party" on the last day of her teaching career, I can say without question that her students loved her as much as she loved them. I had to stand on a desk far to the back of the classroom, while a vast thrall of perhaps one-hundred students enveloped her. The tears, the laughter and the joy blended together into a symphony of triumph and admiration. If ever I beheld a real-life scene from "Mr. Holland's Opus", this was art becoming life. Please accept both my condolensces for your loss and gratitude for her contributions. cP

Dr. Sam was the Homeroom Teacher for two of our children, and she was a huge influence on them. She was the most welcoming person. She loved talking about England to me, an Englishman. It was obvious that she loved what she did with every fibre of her being. Emily and I send our condolences to all her family for your irreplaceable loss.
