Charles Nicholas Obituary

NICHOLAS Charles Henry Nicholas, 6th Viscount Hardinge of Lahore, died peacefully on Sunday, January 18, 2004, at the age of 47, in Darien, after a long battle, borne with gentle honesty and grace. He was born on August 25, 1956. He is survived by his cherished wife, Julie; and his beloved children, Matthew, Emilie and Olivia, of whom he was enormously proud. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Christopher Murray of London; his brothers, Andrew and Maximilian; and a wide company of family and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Nicholas, 5th Viscount Hardinge; his grandparents, Viscount and Viscountess Hardinge; and the Honourable Hartland de M. Molson of Montreal. Educated at Upper Canada College, Trinity College School and McGill University, Lord Hardinge had a long and active career in private banking at the Royal Bank of Canada in Montreal, London and New York. An avid sportsman, an accomplished gardener, a keen tennis player and a fanatical fisherman, he was happiest in the outdoors, especially in the Laurentian hills and lake he cherished so much. He was a loving and devoted husband and father, and always a generous-spirited and loyal friend. With the patient support of his family and friends, and the invaluable help of his caregivers facing the challenge of his disease, he showed all who knew him the true meaning of courage and love. He will never be forgotten. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 27, 2004, at 3:30 p.m. at Noroton Presbyterian Church in Darien. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Charles' memory to the Division of Movement Disorders, Neurological Institute, Columbia Presbyterian University Hospital, Box 154, New York, NY 10032, will be gratefully acknowledged. The Fred D. Knapp Funeral Home, 267 Greenwich Avenue, Greenwich, is in charge of arrangements.
