Darren Reidy Obituary

Darren J. Reidy
Darren Joseph Reidy, aged 44, passed away unexpectedly, on June 24, 2024, in Brooklyn, NY. He was born on October 19, 1979, in Bridgeport, CT to Mary Jane and John Reidy of Stratford, CT. He was a graduate of Notre Dame High School of Fairfield, CT, in 1998, and received his BA from The College of William and Mary, in 2002, with a semester abroad at Maynooth County Kildare, Ireland. Darren loved the written word and was an avid reader, which led him to pursue that in his professional life, working at The Village Voice and contributing articles to Rolling Stone and Men's Journal among others. He had a lifelong passion for music and was constantly adding to an eclectic record collection. Darren always liked sports, but nothing topped his love for baseball, especially his Yankees. Darren is lovingly survived by his parents, Mary Jane and John Reidy of Stratford, CT, his brother, Brendan Reidy and his wife Joelle of Wellesley, MA, and their three children. He is also survived by his aunts, Joan Nugent and Linda Jean Adato and their families, and his uncle, Kevin Reidy and his family. Calling hours will take place on Monday, July 1, from 4 - 7 p.m. at the Adzima Funeral Home, 50 Paradise Green Place, Stratford, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 2, at 10 a.m., meeting directly at St. Mark Church, 500 Wigwam Lane, Stratford, CT. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that remembrances be made in the form of contributions to the JED Foundation, a mental health non-profit that works to strengthen mental health and reduce harmful behaviors in young adults. My deepest condolences to the Reidy family. I worked with Darren at The Village Voice. He was funny, cool, and kind; everything you could hope for in a friend. He was also a superb writer who read constantly and cared deeply about the integrity of his words. I still think "Darren!" whenever I see a great plaid flannel shirt. I´m grateful our paths crossed. It was a pleasure and privilege to know him.

This is heartbreaking. I worked with Darren at the Village Voice for a few years. We hung out every day at work-and after work. We were on the Veggies softball team. Darren played outfield-always with a cigarette in his mouth. We called him James Dean. He was nice, cool, kind, gentle, and compassionate. He had a brilliant mind and cared about the world.
My sympathy goes out to his family. What a great guy and friend.
