Doris Merritt Obituary

MERRITT Doris Buckingham Treadwell Merritt, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, January 20, 2009. She was predeceased by her husband of 33 years, George Silleck Merritt. Born 1919 in Southport, daughter of Francis Brady Treadwell and Cornelia Sherwood Buckingham Treadwell and granddaughter of Conrad Buckingham, former First Selectman of Fairfield, she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), direct descendant of the Sherwood family, one of Fairfield's founding families and owned Treadwell land that came directly from the King of England. A graduate of Lesley University, degree in Dietary Science, and Roger Ludlowe High School, she enjoyed a successful full time career as a professional healthcare dietician, most recently at Greenwich Hospital for 11 years, Stamford Hospital, Overlook Hospital, Summit, N.J., Hannaman Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa., Westerly Hospital, Westerly, R.I., and North Adams Hospital, North Ad-ams, Mass. She will be remembered for her generous community spirit, volunteerism and philanthropy to more than 100 organizations. She is survived by her son, Charles Merritt, his wife, Signe, as well as, grandchildren, Margaret and Robert; brother, Donald Treadwell and his children, Susan and Kathy; along with many cousins, nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her brother, Nellis Treadwell. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 31, at 9:30 a.m. by Reverend Nicholas T. Porter, followed by a reception at Trinity Episcopal Church, 651 Pequot Avenue in Southport. Interment in Putnam Cemetery in Greenwich. Arrangements by Fred D. Knapp & Son, Greenwich, CT 203-869-0315. Cards and flowers may be sent to the Merritt family, 178 Mill Hill Terrace, Southport, CT 06890.
