Dorothy Guman Obituary

Dorothy A. Guman
Dorothy Ann (Tetreault) Guman passed away on January 13, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on August 8, 1938, in Waterbury, CT, to the late Leonel and Katherine (Samela) Tetreault, she attended Sts. Peter & Paul Grammar School and Waterbury Catholic High School. Dottie's strong Catholic faith was the cornerstone of her life, guiding her actions and values. She spent many years as a parishioner of St. Charles Borromeo Church, in Bridgeport, CT and more recently, at St. Catherine of Siena in Trumbull, CT. After high school, Dottie earned her RN degree from St. Vincent's School of Nursing in Bridgeport, CT. Her early nursing career included time at St. Vincent's, as well as St Francis Hospital in Hartford. Over the years, she served her community as a school nurse at Harding High School in Bridgeport and as a resident nurse at Bridgeport Jai Alai. An active member of the Bridgeport Democratic Party, Dottie served as an officer for the Democratic Federation of Women, a district leader for the 136th district, and Vice Chair of the Bridgeport Town Committee. Dorothy was a devoted mother to Mary Beth Raffin (husband Claude) of Oakville, CT, John D. Guman III of Stratford, CT, and Mark Guman (wife Cathy) of Merrimack, NH, taking immense pride in being present for every moment of their lives. Dottie, better known as "Grams", became a grandmother in 1996 and was a fantastic role model for her 8 grandchildren. She celebrated their big life milestones – from sporting events to graduations to weddings – and embraced the small moments, like "just because" visits or sleepovers. Her presence made ordinary moments extraordinary, and her home was a sanctuary where her grandchildren felt welcomed, cherished, and deeply loved. Her eight grandchildren, the lights of her life, are Claude and Isabelle Raffin of Oakville, CT; Madeline Guman (husband Jeff Carron) of South Portland, ME; Jack Guman of Stratford, CT; Samantha Alzola (husband Andrew) of Hampton, VA; Matthew Guman of Manchester, NH, Timothy Guman of Durham, NH, and Michael Guman of Merrimack, NH. She was also very proud to be aunt to many nieces and nephews, and godmother to several godchildren. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Attorney John D. Guman Jr., and by her brother Lionel Tetreault. She is survived by her children, her grandchildren, her brother Nicholas Tetreault (wife Sheila) of Waterbury, CT, and her sister Irene Conway of Waterbury, CT. Family and friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 20, 2025, at the Adzima Funeral Home, 50 Paradise Green Place, Stratford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, January 21st, at 10:00 a.m. meeting directly at St Catherine of Siena Church; 220 Shelton Rd, Trumbull, CT. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Monroe. To make an online condolence, please visit www.adzimafuneralhome.com

District leader Guman of the democratic party was one of the last old style democrats who were for the people. She and I worked on varied projects, keeping always the democratic party strong. As the benefactor in politics for Mayor Bill Finch, she certainly gave him his electoral start. She typifies the old democratic-tammany party that meant to empower everyone rather than diminish the authority of the voters, back when a district leader had true power. I thank her and her family for their friendship through the decades and she will be missed
