Elizabeth Shoup Obituary

Shoup, Elizabeth
Elizabeth "Betty" Shoup, age 96, of Westport, beloved wife of the late Dr. Homer Shoup, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2015 with her family at her side in Norwalk Hospital. Betty's memory will be embraced by her children, John "Skip" Shoup, of Westport, Elizabeth "Cindy" Doucette, and her husband, Steve, of Hampstead, New Hampshire; her cherished granddaughter, Emmy Doucette; one brother, John Wyckoff, and his wife, Diane, of Norwalk; several nieces, nephews and dear friends. In addition to her husband Homer, Betty was predeceased by her first husband, Harold Spicer, who died while serving in the United States Army Air Force, one son, Jeffrey Shoup, her parents, Helen Buck Wyckoff- Kempton and Herbert Ashton Wyckoff, and her sister, Sunny McNeil. Betty was noted for her long term devotion and dedication to both her family and volunteerism to her community. She was awarded the Westport YMCA volunteer of the year and her dedication to the YMCA spanned over 50 years teaching the importance of swimming to young children and working with PALS at the preschool wiping up tears and creating a smile. A longtime member of Country Club of Fairfield, Betty enjoyed the many summertime activities there with her husband and children. She practiced what she preached and believed in exercise as key to her longevity. Even up to this past year, she continued to engage in yoga and riding her bike. She was a four time breast cancer survivor. Betty was a charm and joy, often called "quite remarkable" for her age. She was always willing to lend a helping hand and listening ear to those who needed her and that was her true gift. Friends are invited to join her family in celebrating Betty's life on Friday, February 20th at 1 PM in Trinity Episcopal Church, in Southport with Reverend Margaret Hodgkins officiating. Her interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to: Trinity Episcopal Church, 651 Pequot Avenue, Southport, CT 06890.
