Frank Kovacs Obituary

Kovacs, Frank
Frank William Kovacs of Derby, husband of Josephine Kovacs, passed away at age 90 on January 12, 2013 in Griffin Hospital. Frank was born on December 13, 1922 in Bridgeport son of the late Gustav and Mary (Zelinsky) Kovacs. Frank had one brother, Gustav Jr.; three sisters, Evelyn, Mary, Pauline (Weeks) Kovacs and several late step and half brothers and sisters, Alfred, Paul J, Augusta (Olaf), Wilma (Demalo), Frances (Palastak), Emma Kovacs and John Palembas and late stepfather, Martin Palembas. Frank graduated from Bassick High School in Bridgeport and attended Bucknell College. He served his country in World War II in the Army Air Corps as a pilot trainee, mechanic and radio man in the 3rd Emergency Rescue Squadron, flying air/sea rescue in the Pacific Theater. He also served in the Philippines as a crew member on board a PBY with the 5th Air Force where he earned the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters, the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon. He was honorably discharged at Ft. Devens, MA in 1945. While stationed at Scott Air Base in Illinois, Frank met and later married Josephine, who was the love of his life for 67 years. After the war, they lived in Bridgeport and had two children, Marlene and Frank, before moving to Derby, where they lived for 50 years. Frank and Josephine attended St. Jude Catholic Church in Derby. He worked at Avco-Lycoming in Stratford as a tool and die maker for many years until his retirement. Frank loved his family, fishing and travelling to Illinois, Washington and New Hampshire to visit family and enjoy his frequent visits with his sister Pauline's family in CT. He had a quick wit and loved a good laugh, corny jokes, jelly doughnuts, his wife's apple pie, Pam's pumpkin bread and Mollie and Bess, the dogs. Frank is survived by his wife, Josephine, his daughter, Marlene Kovacs (and Mike Clark) of Olympia, WA, his son, Frank (and wife, Pam) Kovacs of Shelton and many nieces and nephews.
The family has requested a private memorial service with final interment in Mt. St. Peter Cemetery, Derby. The Edward F. Adzima Funeral Home, 253 Elizabeth St., Derby has been entrusted with Frank's arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Frank's memory may be made to St. Jude Parish, 71 Pleasant View Rd., Derby, CT 06418 or The CT Humane Society, 701 Russell Rd., Newington, CT 06111 (1-800-452-0114, www.cthumane.org). A horse walks into a bar....the bartender says "why the long face?" :=) Dad loved that joke. When we take a walk around the corner from our house, there's a pasture with two Norwegian Fjord horses. There's one named Daege that is mostly black with a white mask on his face.I've told him the joke and he just looks back at me with a long face and I think of Dad. We all love and miss him very much.

My Dad's services were held yesterday 1/17/13. At a later date in hopefully the near future, I will update this book with some more information and details. I would like to extend a quick thank you to all of our friends, family, and neighbors who have taken the time to recognize Dad through the online guest book here and through the Adzima Funeral Home website. In some cases, I do not have contact information to personally thank all, but please know that all entries meant so very much to myself and family during this difficult time. We have also received many non online condolences, gifts, food, and support from so many others paying respect to Dad and providing support to our family. My sincere thank you to all from myself and family!

January 17, 2013

My Dear Uncle Frank, I LOVE YOU. I have so many great memories when you used to come visit us in Westport at my Moms (your sister Pauline's)house. You and Aunt Jo Marlene and Frank would come and make us laugh and very happy! I will never forget when I was 10 years old and all the kids went with their friends to local fair. I was sad because i missed going with them. So you personally took me and I rode those amusement swings and got cotton candy! You went out of your way for me! And dancing at Mom and Dads 50th anniversary! How fun! The baptisms of Luke and Ben as their Godfather was so beautiful. Gosh there are so many things to tell you...like being with Mom (your sister Pauline) in Oct 2008 at her 2 last days. But my heart is filled with gratitude and love around our last visit last week when my husband ED, our sweet dog Abby, my veteran brother Bill Weeks, and myself came to see you. I will always remember your beautiful smile upon seeing us! And how you enjoyed the jelly doughnut. So thank you from the bottom of my aching and broken Heart ,for being such a great Uncle and great role model to me. LOVE Paula Weeks Barta . And all my Family too
